Spice Up Your Summer Palette with Vintage Jewels

Spice Up Your Summer Palette with Vintage Jewels
April 19, 2015 Barbara Schwartz

In the notes for her Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear Collection, Donna Karan stated, “Time to show your colors and paint the town with urban chic”.  So I’ve followed her advice and chosen deeply-saturated hues of flavorful spices – curry, pepper and cinnamon – to liven up your summer palette with vintage costume jewelry in these shades.  These warm colors work really well with clothing and accessories in the same tones as well as with pastels and neutrals.  You will find a great selection of vintage pieces in these spicy colors here on the TruFaux Jewels website.

The Gemstones

The gemstones (natural minerals) that occur in these shades are citrine and yellow (or golden) topaz, which both range from pale yellow to yellow-orange; ruby; brown topaz; and carnelian, the reddish-orange variety of chalcedony pictured on the left.  Fortunately, the makers of costume jewelry from the 1920s through the 1950s developed crystal and glass stones and beads in these shades as well as what we now call art glass (stones in imaginative colors or combinations of colors, or stones with special effects).

The Outfits

In this collection of outfits for spring and summer, you will see a variety of ensembles for casual, office and evening wear.  I like using the same pieces to accessorize different outfits to show how versatile the jewelry is and to suggest color combinations you may not have considered.  Many examples of what I call everyday basics (e.g., blue or black jeans, a white blouse or tee shirt, and a blazer; a neutral skirt or pants and a white top; a neutral dress) are included to inspire you to refresh your existing wardrobe with vintage costume jewelry in colors you may not normally wear.

The outfits presented below are in slide-show format, with the caption (my comments) at the bottom of each slide. If you like a particular outfit and want to see the detailed descriptions of the items shown, just click on the image to be transferred to the Polyvore site.
