If I were Marta Dusseldorp’s stylist, she’d be sure to wear these earrings

When I think of the 1950s – because I will first think of the jewelry – pieces by makers such as Schreiner first come to mind. Unlike those who created the fabulous fakes usually associated with that decade, he and some of his contemporaries designed costume jewelry that never tried to imitate precious jewels. Instead they used imaginative combinations of colors and stone shapes, cuts, and sizes to create pieces that are still amazing today. These ear clips with a cluster of colored glass stones (the dominant ‘50s style) are just one example.

If I were styling Marta Dusseldorp for her role in the Australian TV series A Place to Call Home, which is set in the 1950s, she’d be in these Schreiner earrings. And if I were styling her for her everyday wear, I’d put her in the same thing. Click here to see more about these earrings.

1950s Fashions

The costume designers for A Place to Call Home dress the female characters in the hour-glass silhouette of that era. We see women in trim, closely-fitted, tailored clothes that emphasize sloping shoulders, the curve of the bust and hips, and the nipped-in waist. Two-piece suits, A-line and pencil skirts, sheaths, and cardigans and sweater sets are typical daytime attire. Gowns with tight waists, full skirts, and low necklines (including strapless, off-the-shoulder, and halter bodices) dominate evening wear. Accessories are important to the well-dressed woman, whose hat, shoes, handbag, and gloves are carefully coordinate.

Thanks to very prolific and talented costume jewelry makers from that era, colorful necklaces, bracelets, brooches, and earrings created to complement 1950s fashion have survived. Pieces such as this pair of ear clips are as flattering to today’s fashions as they were to the distinctive style of that decade.
