  • Paper Dolls for Grown-Ups

Did you enjoy playing with paper dolls when you were a little girl? If you did, you are not alone. Paper dolls, which have been around for centuries, could be purchased in sets and were often published in magazines.

    What is Polyvore?

While vintage and new paper dolls are readily available online, the folks at have built their website to provide a paper-doll experience suitable for grown-ups. It’s a virtual online shopping mall and social media platform for fashion, beauty, and home décor that allows you to create outfits with pictures of real clothing and accessories that you choose.

    Here’s how it works…

Once you’ve registered on the Polyvore site and added the Clipper (their electronic scissors) to your browser’s toolbar, you can shop in two ways: 1) choose items from the Polyvore virtual shopping mall; and 2) collect pictures of merchandise from websites all over the world (which then become available to all Polyvore shoppers). Items you choose are then stored in your virtual closet. (When a user likes one of your items, it is stored in that person’s virtual closet.) You can drag and drop images from your closet to create an outfit (a set in Polyvore terms). The site allows you to re-size, crop and rotate an image to suit your layout. Your set can include clothing, accessories, and make-up or other beauty products, and more. The site also has background images that you can use, as well as stock words/phrases in a variety of fonts, lettering to allow you to make up your own text, frames, colors and even sounds.

And if that isn’t enough, you can create collections (groups of sets on a theme). You can join groups, enter contests, follow users whose sets you admire, and share your sets on social media — Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, and your blog — and by e-mail. Polyvore offers you the opportunity to create looks and share your style with the site community, get styling tips from other members, and shop (like window-shopping, where no money is involved, or actually complete a purchase). You decide which activities you want to participate in.
