Style expert Deborah Boland (www.fabulousafter40.com) recently included big earrings in her list of “7 Fall Accessories to Look Fabulous after 40”. She advises pairing “large dangly earrings with everything from a tee and jeans to a cocktail dress! They’ll draw eyes towards your face and add some decadence to any look.” I couldn’t agree more. Earrings are among my favorite types of jewelry. They allow me to make a statement of my personal style and wear colors that I don’t usually wear. For this article I’ve chosen a stunning pair of earrings by Schreiner (described below) and built outfits for everyday, office and evening wear on Polyvore, so you can see how versatile a pair of statement earrings can be. I hope these choices inspire you to accessorize with vintage costume jewelry. The TruFaux Jewels website features stunning earrings produced in Europe and America in the 1920s through the 1950s.
The lavish citrine, amethyst and sapphire 1950s dangling earrings by Schreiner that you’ll see in the ensembles below are a wonderful illustration of this maker’s use of stunning art glass and imaginative color combinations. Mixing bright yellow with pale lavender and blue may seem unusual to you. However, yellow is a great complementary color for purple because the two are opposites on the color wheel. Detailed photos, including a close-up of the center art glass stone, and a complete description of these earrings are here.
With Everyday Basics
This elegant outfit features black wool gabardine skinny pants and a white open-neck voile blouse, accessorized with black ankle-strapped flats and a black textured-leather shoulder bag with two-tone metal chain. Whether you wear skinny pants or another cut, chances are that you have black trousers (or jeans) and a tailored white or cream long-sleeved shirt in your closet. I consider this classic look to be like a blank canvas waiting for jewelry, like these earrings, to bring the outfit to life and make it your own.
To The Office
This office-ready outfit is similar to the one above, but here I’ve paired black wool twill pants with a blue silk blouse to complement the blue crystals that dangle from the earrings. I’ve chosen black suede pumps and a black tote to dress up the basic look for work. The textured black belt is an optional accessory. You could easily substitute navy pants with navy or black shoes.
In the Evening
This navy lace dress is just right for an evening out. The blue glitter fabric on the clutch and the gold shoes add just the right amount of bling without competing with these earrings, the star of the show. You can add a shawl in a shade that complements the dress and earrings, like the one I’ve chosen here.
