1920s Jewelry

About 1920s Jewelry

This unique selection of 1920s jewelry includes long earrings, long and short necklaces, narrow bracelets, and brooches. Originally designed for the flapper, these jewels are equally stylish today. Many 1920s costume pieces were made from materials such as white metals, clear and colored glass stones and beads, faux pearls, diamanté, and marcasites, in imitation of fine jewelry. Filigree pieces in white and gilt metal were also popular. Colorful early plastics (Celluloid, Bakelite, and Galalith) were fashioned into novelty pieces at this time. Jewelry in the Art Deco style made its debut in the 1920s.

Amethyst & Sterling Bracelet by Foster & Bro.

This sterling amethyst bracelet is a popular style from the 1920s. It features four faceted, cushion-cut, deep-amethyst-glass stones. They are set in open-back, vertical frames that alternate with horizontal oval panels and narrower links. This lovely, well-made jewel by a less-known maker closes with a clasp that hooks onto the last link. A lush, regal color that’s versatile and easy to wear. • Black vintage Bakelite earrings with diamanté-inlaid pendants
    Art Deco black Bakelite earrings
    USD$225.00

Black Bakelite & Diamanté Dangle Earrings

    , ,
These vintage Bakelite earrings are unusual. The pendants in black Bakelite (or other plastic from the 1920s) are embellished with a silver painted design and inlaid diamantés. A sterling chain connects each drop to a diamanté-centered black bead designed to adorn the earlobe. These all-original screw-back earrings can be modified for pierced ears. Light-weight and easy to wear, this fun pair works well for off-duty and business-casual attire. Although many of the stones have darkened, these earrings are still very attractive. Blue Glass Flower & Diamanté 1920s Choker Necklace

    , ,
This 1920s choker necklace is formed by clusters of delicate blue-glass-flower-shaped beads with white glass centers that alternate with clusters of diamantés. Three rondelles form the barrel clasp. This necklace, which was probably made in France in the 1920s, has been restrung by my expert jeweler. What a knockout! Chrysoprase & Sterling Drop Earrings by Wachenheimer Bros.

    , ,
These chrysoprase and sterling drop earrings by Wachenheimer Bros. have square and oblong stones. By the end of the 1920s, the company was marketing Wachenheimer Real Stone Jewelry with their company name instead of the Diamonbar trademark. The original screw-backs were converted to sterling silver lever-backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. Scroll down to see an Art Deco necklace to wear with these lovely earrings.

Chrysoprase & Crystal Art Deco Dangle Earrings

    , ,
These Art Deco dangle earrings feature two faceted, oblong chrysoprase-glass stones with a faceted, round collet-set crystal at the bottom. Each stone is separated by a ring link, so there’s plenty of movement here. The original screw-backs were converted to sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. Note that although the open-back bottom crystals appear dark in the first photo, they are, in fact, clear and sparkly (as in the second photo). • Statement choker necklace with red, black, green & diamanté disks
Front view of necklace w/faceted, colorful disks
    USD$295.00

Chrysoprase, Onyx, & Ruby Disk Choker with Rondelles

    , ,
This statement choker necklace features faceted, opaque chrysoprase-, onyx- and ruby-glass disks and rondelles. The components are strung on metal chain. The necklace closes with a barrel clasp formed by two of the disks. Based on the construction of this piece, I think it is European in origin. As often happens with necklaces made like this one, the chain has stretched. I don’t recommend having a jeweler cut the excess – just keep it at the back. This multi-colored, versatile necklace can be worn with many Art Deco jewels, depending on the color you wish to emphasize — scroll down to see a selection. Or wear your real or faux diamond studs to complete the look.

    USD$395.00

Citrine & Crystal 1920s Tiered Necklace

    , ,
The design and construction of this tiered necklace, a variation on the 1920s chicklet-style, is first class. Golden yellow, square-cut glass stones alternate with oblong crystals to form the necklace and tiered centerpiece. Round dangling citrine-glass stones add the movement that was so essential in the Art Deco era. All of the stones are faceted and mounted in decorated, silver-tone metal. The construction makes me think this piece was made in Europe. This divine jewel, which I initially purchased for myself, closes with a spring-ring clasp. These citrine pendant earrings from the mid-1920s are probably Czech in origin. What’s really unique is the metal inlays in each glass drop, which give the appearance of marcasites. Diamanté & Silver Vintage Dangle Earrings

    , ,
These vintage dangle earrings are diamanté-encrusted with faceted, square-cut stones at the earlobe and as the focal point on the drop. Long and luxurious, these all-original Art Deco pendants have gold-colored ear wires with shepherd hooks for pierced ears. I am unaware of their metal content. I think these beautiful earrings are European in origin because of their exceptional quality, their fasteners, and the "SILVER" stamp on the back. The use of "800 silver" (which is less than the 925 standard for sterling) was common in Europe when these jewels were made. Pieces like these are difficult to photograph, and the earrings are much brighter and more sparkly than the photos indicate. This glamorous pair walked the runway at a recent fashion show.
