1920s Jewelry

This unique selection of 1920s jewelry includes long earrings, long and short necklaces, narrow bracelets, and brooches. Originally designed for the flapper, these jewels are equally stylish today. Many 1920s costume pieces were made from materials such as white metals, clear and colored glass stones and beads, faux pearls, diamanté, and marcasites, in imitation of fine jewelry. Filigree pieces in white and gilt metal were also popular. Colorful early plastics (Celluloid, Bakelite, and Galalith) were fashioned into novelty pieces at this time. Jewelry in the Art Deco style made its debut in the 1920s. Read more about 1920s jewelry and fashion.

Amethyst & Crystal Bead Long 1920s Necklace

    , ,
This 1920s necklace of alternating amethyst-glass and crystal beads was designed to complement the long-waisted, slim flapper silhouette but is equally fashionable today. This substantial piece has just been professionally restrung with knots and no clasp. Although the necklace was designed to be worn as a single long (35″) strand, you can wear it doubled if you have a slim neck. A pearl extender clasp (see the seventh photo), which makes the doubling possible, will be included with this necklace. This jewel looks great with the Amethyst Bead Long Art Deco Necklace, also weighty, shown in the last photo. Scroll down to see it and a selection of coordinating bracelets and earrings.

    Amethyst Bangle Bracelet

    , ,
This amethyst bangle bracelet from the 1920s has faceted, square-cut glass stones channel-set in sterling silver with engraved edges. This piece is wider and more substantial than its contemporaries. In fact, its size, weight, design, and components are nearly identical to one of my own Lady Gloria Hinged Bracelets by Wachenheimer Brothers. This piece is unsigned on the tongue (where Diamonbar bangles were marked), so I can't be sure. Either way, this bracelet is so beautiful and well-made that you won't be disappointed. Amethyst Bead Long 1920s Necklace

    , ,
This vintage amethyst bead necklace never goes out of style. It is a long (31”) strand of graduating faceted, deep-purple glass beads with crystal disk spacers. This piece has been professionally restrung without a clasp and has substantial weight. Made in the 1920s, it was designed to be worn as a single, long strand, to compliment the drop-waist fashion of the day. As an alternative, the third photo shows the necklace worn doubled, with the aid of a device called a pearl extender clasp (shown in the fifth photo). I will include one with this purchase. This necklace looks fabulous with another long 1920s necklace, which is also weighty, that is shown in the last photo. Aquamarine & Sterling Line Bracelet

    , ,
This vintage aquamarine bracelet has square-cut glass stones channel-set in rhodium-plated sterling silver links with engraved edges. It is an excellent example of an Art Deco line bracelet, so popular in the 1920s-1930s. Longer than many from this era, this one has substantial weight and width as well as excellent construction and articulation. The concealed clasp has a safety catch. This bracelet is signed, but I cannot identify the maker. Because of its simple, classic lines, this bracelet coordinates well with more elaborate pieces from other eras. In fact, it adorned a runway model at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. She wore this jewel with fabulous 1950s diamanté chandelier earrings, which you can see here. The original screw-backs were converted to sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. These unusual Art Deco earrings are a lovely shade of blue. The 935 mark refers to a higher silver content than the sterling standard, which is 925 parts per 1000 – not uncommon in German pieces of the era. This brooch was in my personal collection and was among the first pieces I bought when I focused on Art Deco jewelry. Longer than the typical bracelet of this era, this Leach & Miller creation may have been designed to be worn on the upper arm, as a so-called slave bracelet. You can wear it now either way – simply pull apart the ends to put it on. Crystal Art Deco Pendant Earrings

    , ,
These Art Deco crystal earrings are long pendants that end with beautiful princess-cut stones. Each is topped with a trio of diamanté. Two smaller ones are separated by white-metal links. The large stone at the top was originally the face of the sterling silver screw backs. My expert jeweler replaced them with sterling silver wires with lever backs for pierced ears. If the 2 ½” length isn’t to your liking, you could have the lever-back wires replaced with posts. The length would then be 1 ¾”. These lovely earrings were part of my personal collection. They go with absolutely everything!

Crystal Bangle Bracelet by H. Payton

    , ,
This crystal bangle bracelet by H. Payton is a style that was all the rage in the 1920s. The company is best known by their PAYCO mark. Bracelets like this one were available in many colors of glass to imitate gemstones. With open-back faceted, square-cut stones to let light pass through, this piece goes with everything. It also looks great with other bangles and/or line bracelets of the era. Women typically wore multiple bracelets back then, and I confess that I’ve adopted that practice as part of my own personal style. This bracelet was made for a slim wrist, so please note the inside circumference (6 3/4″) and check your wrist size before purchasing this piece. A few of the stones have tiny chips, and there's a space between the stone next to the hinge and the metal (shown in the last photo). Onyx & Crystal 1920s Bar Brooch

    , ,
Faceted, rectangular onyx-glass and crystal stones form the body of this Art Deco bar brooch. Each end has a faceted, onyx-glass triangle. The silver-tone metal setting has cut-outs, creating a checkered pattern with the stones. They are all open-back, and the workmanship is superb. The trombone clasp and unusual design make me think this brooch is European in origin. I also think the setting is sterling silver, but the mark is unreadable. Silver-mesh chain accented with two round faux pearls on each side complete the piece. The mesh between one side pearl and the clasp has very minor fraying. The photos of the center make the filigree caps appear much warmer than they actually are. This necklace, which closes with a spring-ring clasp, was made for a slim neck.
