1930s Jewelry

About 1930s Jewelry

This collection of 1930s jewelry includes pendant earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches, as well as new types of jewels – dress clips and double-clip brooches. In fact, dress clips were the most important jeweled accessory during the Great Depression. Costume jewelry makers also produced fruit salads, molded glass that imitated carved gemstones popularized by fine jewelers such as Cartier. Bakelite and other plastics were used to create whimsical jewelry in every possible form. The Art Deco style continued to evolve, with new motifs and streamlining. By decade’s end, Machine Age (aka Streamline Modern) jewelry was in vogue.

  • Vintage amethyst earrings w/diamantes
    Close-up view of single earring
    USD$295.00

Amethyst & Diamanté Earrings from Austria

    , ,
These vintage amethyst earrings feature three rows of vertically-set stones. In the middle are two deep-purple baguettes with a round diamanté on top and a faceted, teardrop-shaped diamanté at the bottom. On either side of the middle, the pattern is repeated but with a single baguette. The setting is rhodium-plated metal shaped to hold the stones together, making each pendant one piece. A single, faceted, round diamanté sits at the earlobe. These 1930s Art Deco earrings from Austria are all-original screw-backs and can be modified for pierced ears. The color combination is rich, regal, and easy-to-wear.

  • Theodor Fahrner bracelet with gilded sterling & aquamarines
1920s-1930s filigree bracelet by Theodor Fahrner
    USD$1,495.00

Aquamarine & Gilt Sterling Filigree Theodor Fahrner Bracelet

    , ,
This Theodor Fahrner bracelet is spectacular! Each gilded-sterling silver link with corded wire spirals holds a collet-set faux aquamarine. This fabulous Art Deco jewel is an excellent example of the type of filigree this maker is known for. The book cited as a reference indicates that the filigree pieces were made post-1932, but the same source dates the maker’s mark to the 1920s. I don’t think the date matters – this bracelet is exquisite! It has a box clasp and safety catch. Scroll down to see a sterling Fahrner necklace that looks lovely with this piece.

Black & White Bakelite Vintage Charm Bracelet

    , ,
This vintage charm bracelet has black-and-white Bakelite cubes that dance on either side of the metal center. The decorated chrome links form a tank-track pattern and close with a spring-ring clasp. To some people, these charms resemble a type of licorice candy (whose name I don’t know). To me, this piece says 1930s Europe. It’s definitely fun to wear!

Black & White Marbled Glass Bead Necklace

    , ,
This black and white beaded necklace is a lovely take on this color combination. What appear as white glass beads are actually clear glass with white swirls. The variation in shape and size of beads adds to the beauty of this substantial piece. The beads and black spacers are strung on chain. This jewel closes with a barrel clasp marked "Made in France". All of these features identify this stunning jewel as made by Louis Rousselet. It has been authenticated. Once part of my personal collection, this stunning necklace is always a classic.

  • 1930s earrings with black Bakelite & diamanté
1930s earrings by Schreiber & Hiller
    USD$245.00

Black Bakelite & Diamanté 1930s Earrings by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
At the top of these 1930s earrings is a link with engraved sides that holds seven diamantés. At the bottom is another diamanté-set link flanked by black Bakelite (or Galalith) on three sides. In the middle is a single stone. Each earring has a small chip of Bakelite at the bottom, but that minor flaw in no way detracts from their beauty. The original ear clips were converted to sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. USD$245.00

Black Bakelite & Diamanté Art Deco Brooch

    , ,
This Art Deco Bakelite brooch is not for the faint-hearted! From the 1930s, this large black jewel has ornate hand-carving accented with faceted, square-cut and round diamantés. The stones, which were expertly replaced by the previous owner, are a sparkly contrast to the dark color. At 3 ¾” long, this brooch is a real statement piece. It closes with a roll-over safety clasp.

Black Bakelite & Diamanté Flexible Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
Vintage Bakelite jewelry as beautiful as this German flexible bracelet from the 1930s is hard to find. It has vertical links of diamanté alternating with black Bakelite. The stones in this piece are relatively large – only four to each flat-top link. This Art Deco bracelet closes with a concealed clasp. Because one of the markings is "Patented" (an English word stamped by a German maker), I think this bracelet was intended for export. • Vintage black Bakelite necklace with diamanté links.
German Machine Age necklace by Schreiber & Hiller
    USD$445.00

Black Bakelite & Diamanté Necklace by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
A beautiful example of Machine Age design that you will love. This vintage black Bakelite necklace features six curved links set with diamantés that alternate with Bakelite (or Galalith) links with pointed tops. Because the jeweled links are curved, the centerpiece follows the curve of your neck instead of laying out in a straight line. A scroll chain with a spring-ring clasp completes this elegant and easy-to-wear necklace that I always enjoyed. You can see it on my favorite model in this blog post. • Bakelite brooch with diamanté accents

    USD$225.00

    Black Bakelite Brooch with Diamantés

    , ,
This black Bakelite (or Galalith) brooch has a curved centerpiece topped with a collet-set diamanté. Each end features three rows of slightly-curved links with channel-set stones. The components are attached to a rhodium-plated metal back. This piece closes with a trombone clasp. The design and construction remind me of jewelry created by the German makers Schreiber & Hiller in the 1930s. Although the channel-set stones have aged a bit, this brooch is still a stunner! Black Diamanté Vintage Tank Track Brooch by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
This vintage tank track brooch is an unusual application of this classic Machine Age pattern. Schreiber & Hiller have made it even more distinctive by using black diamantés channel-set in slender, slightly curved links on the outside with a double-row of smaller, slightly lighter stones inside. The difference in colors is very subtle. At 3 ¼” long, this piece is a fabulous and versatile example of the era. This jewel closes with a trombone clasp.

Blue Glass & Chrome Fringe Necklace

    , ,
This fringe statement necklace has cobalt-blue glass tubes and chrome balls dangling from chrome links. The metal and fringe elements have a Machine Age-look and give this piece lots of movement! Some of the blue glass tubes have minor chips, but they are not noticeable when this beauty is worn. This 1930s necklace, which closes with an old-style spring-ring clasp, was part of my personal collection. I am reluctantly offering it to a new home. A perfect adornment for a woman who looks best in cool colors and loves statement pieces.

  • 1930s French necklace with carnelian, jade & pearl glass beads
    1930s French Art Deco necklace

Carnelian, Jade & Pearl Bead Necklace

    , ,
This 1930s French necklace has large jade-glass beads and smaller carnelian-glass beads with chrome caps. A donut-shaped faux pearl flanks each bead. Green and reddish-brown were a popular color combination in the Art Deco era, when this piece was made. I think these complimentary hues are just as fresh today. Large flat chrome links complete the length of this well-made piece, which closes with a decorative barrel clasp. An additional four links (which total one inch) are included, in case you need them. You could wear earrings in one of these colors or a simple pair of silver hoops with this versatile jewel.

This Jakob Bengel necklace in the well-known Mauerwerk (brickwork) pattern is the epitome of German Machine Age design. This chromium-plated brass piece, which closes with a spring-ring clasp, feels very slinky. The articulation is the result of its construction – metal rods in varying lengths connect the brick-like elements. You can wear this collar on either side. The twisted metal decoration on the sides gives this piece a bit of a Machine Age-feel. The markings indicate that this brooch was handmade in Germany, using sterling with a higher silver content (935) than the 925 North American standard.
