1930s Jewelry

This collection of 1930s jewelry includes pendant earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches, as well as new types of jewels – dress clips and double-clip brooches. In fact, dress clips were the most important jeweled accessory during the Great Depression. Costume jewelry makers also produced fruit salads, molded glass that imitated carved gemstones popularized by fine jewelers such as Cartier. Bakelite and other plastics were used to create whimsical jewelry in every possible form. The Art Deco style continued to evolve, with new motifs and streamlining. By decade’s end, Machine Age or Streamline Modern jewelry was in vogue. Read more about 1930s jewelry and fashion.

Onyx, Diamanté & Sterling Bracelet by Wachenheimer Bros.

    , ,
This quintessential Art Deco line bracelet was made by the renowned Wachenheimer Brothers (best known for their Diamonbar pieces). It has faceted, square-cut onyx-glass stones channel-set in sterling silver, with engraved edges and diamanté-studded clasps. This bracelet was made in two sections, with identical fold-over clasps in both places. The type of clasp dates this piece to the early 1930s, after the company stopped using their Diamonbar trademark and near the end of their production. This bracelet was made for a slim wrist, so please note the bracelet length (6 7/8") and check your wrist size before purchasing this piece. The last photo shows it along with two other line bracelets – scroll down to see their details as well as other onyx Art Deco jewels to wear with this lovely bracelet.

Onyx, Marcasite & Sterling German Bracelet

    , ,
This 1930s marcasite and onyx bracelet from Germany features faceted, rectangular stones alternating with embellished sterling links. I have always found many German Art Deco pieces especially appealing because of their high-quality design and construction. Bracelets like this one are extremely versatile for both day and evening wear. This piece was one of the first German Art Deco jewels that joined my personal collection decades ago. I was thrilled when it was chosen to walk the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. Scroll down to see the 1950s ear clips the designer (unexpectedly, but brilliantly!) selected for the model to wear with this jewel. You'll also see two pairs of complementary Art Deco pendant earrings.

Red & Black Galalith 1930s Jakob Bengel Earrings

    , ,
These Jakob Bengel earrings feature raised black Galalith triangles with red Galalith slots. The chrome settings envelope the stones. A stack of chrome disks completes the design. I purchased these earrings from a Bengel expert in the UK. They came with their unmarked ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears, so I am unaware of the metal content. If you require sterling silver, a competent jeweler could switch the ear wires. Scroll down to see Jakob Bengel pieces that work beautifully with these earrings.

This red Bakelite brooch is crafted from a cylinder of red plastic (Bakelite or Galalith?) wrapped in chrome. This Machine Age design reminds me of the work of the German maker Jakob Bengel. , ,
These Art Deco pendant earrings feature deep-red (almost burgundy) glass beads with chrome caps suspended from lines of twisted-chrome. This pair was made by Jakob Bengel in a Machine Age design. When I bought the earrings from a Bengel expert in the UK, they came with ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears. I do not know their metal content. Sapphire & Diamanté Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
This sapphire and diamanté bracelet was made in Germany in the 1930s. Of all of the tank-track bracelets in the group by this maker, this piece is the only one with two colors. The long, narrow links with engraved edges are trapezoid in shape when viewed from the side. This Art Deco bracelet closes with a concealed clasp and safety catch. Although some stones have aged, they don't appear cloudy in the way my camera depicts them. This piece still shines! Scroll down to see a matching brooch.
