1940s Jewelry

About 1940s Jewelry

This collection of 1940s jewelry includes ear clips, necklaces, double-clip brooches, bracelets, and brooches in bold Retro Modern and delicate Victorian motifs. Because women’s clothing during the war years was austere and masculine, jewelry became very feminine. Stylized flowers and animals as well as buckles, bows, ribbons and fabric-like folds were popular. Bracelets were wide and often worn over gloves. Big and bold brooches were worn on the shoulder of day and evening attire. Double-clip brooches, still enormously popular, evolved from geometric pieces into asymmetrical, three-dimensional images. White base metals were replaced with sterling silver, often with yellow-, pink-, green-, and/or rose-gold plating.

    Amethyst Earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli

    , ,
These amethyst costume earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli feature the single, large emerald-cut stones that were so popular in the 1940s. Although classic and classy, this pair of ear clips is really hard to photograph. The stones are open back (without any green, as the photos may suggest) in a silver-tone setting. The actual color is a deep, regal purple. Earrings like these never go out of style!

Amethyst, Diamanté & Rose-Gold Brooch by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
This vintage rose gold brooch is a striking Retro Modern piece made by Pennino Bros. in two layers. The top is a pavé ribbon of rhodium-plated metal that’s edged with faceted, oval amethyst-glass stones topped with tiny diamanté. The center is cinched with rose-gold plated metal. The second layer is a furled rose-gold ribbon that’s attached to the top with a tiny screw. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. This brooch is not flat – the four corners of the bottom layer fold under, as curls of ribbon or fabric would. The back shows the high-quality, complex construction characteristic of this maker.

  • Brooch dress clips with amethysts in rose gold
    Center of Duette
    USD$295.00

Amethyst, Diamanté & Rose Vermeil Duette

    , ,
This brooch/dress clips looks like folded fabric crowned with jewels. It is made of rose-gold-plated sterling silver edged with diamanté accents. At the center of each side is a row of amethyst-glass navettes topped with a row of diamantés. This Duette, which was created for Coro’s high-end line, can be worn as a brooch or as separate dress clips. Their double-prong fasteners work well with heavier fabrics, such as wool blazers and dresses. My camera picked up two stones that appear to be a different shade of purple, but this difference cannot be seen by the naked eye. You can see the utility patent for the brooch mechanism here, shown below Coro's name.

    USD$445.00

Amethyst, Diamanté & Vermeil Bouquet Brooch

    , ,
This Corocraft brooch is just stunning! This Adolph Katz-designed piece has four pavé stems topped with faceted, oval amethyst-glass stones that are gathered through the center of a flower with diamanté-rimmed gold-plated sterling silver petals. The gold-plating on the flower is perfect – the difference in tone you see is from the camera’s reflection. What an outstanding example of the Retro Modern style! I have photographed the brooch in the vertical position as well as horizontally, as it appears in the patent drawing (shown in the second photo). This jewel, which closes with a roll-over safety clasp, is rich in contrasting colors and was in my personal collection. Wear it on the lapel of a blazer, and I guarantee you’ll be noticed!

    Aquamarine & Vermeil Flower Pin

    , ,
This aquamarine flower pin in gold-plated sterling silver is bold and beautiful. It features a faceted, round glass stone set on each of the flower’s five petals. This tall (4-inch) piece was made by Hess-Appel under their Jollé trademark without the accent (which was used only in their advertisements). The stem and two leaves are curled a bit, a characteristic of the 1940s Retro Modern style. The finish is in great shape. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. • Aquamarine earrings by Pennino Bros.
Flirty 1940s earrings by Pennino Brothers
    USD$245.00

Aquamarine Floral Earrings by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
These aquamarine earrings were made by Pennino Bros. in the 1940s. The curled, flirty flower petals in gold-washed metal are the same shape and finish this maker used in a series of 1947 brooches called Sunburst. The glass stone settings are the same as their Bulrush brooch and earrings set from the same year. Both were made in vermeil sterling. According to Brunialti, the patent pending mark on these earrings refers to the clip mechanism, as these designs were not patented. Because the sterling mark is on the ear clip only, I can't say for sure that this pair is sterling silver. These details are just for background – all Pennino jewels are divine! And by facing each other, these earrings frame your face to perfection. Please note that bright spots are merely lighting reflections.

    USD$445.00

Aquamarine, Diamanté & Vermeil Flower Brooch by Mazer Bros.

    , ,
This aquamarine brooch by Mazer Bros. is a fine example of the Retro Modern style. Tall and graceful, this substantial, stylized flower features a large, faceted cushion-cut glass stone as its focal point. The gold-plated, sterling silver setting is further embellished with four, faceted oval-cut stones along with pavé-accented gold swirls. This pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Pieces of this size with a gold-plated finish often don’t survive as well as this brooch has. But costume jewelry was well-made in the 1940s by companies of this maker’s stature. Emerald & Diamanté Circle Brooch by McClelland Barclay

    , ,
This vintage emerald brooch, designed by McClelland Barclay, has two layers. On the bottom is a curved, rhodium-plated base with a pin and roll-over safety clasp. The top layer has faceted, emerald-cut emerald-glass stones, emerald-glass baguettes, and diamanté accents, all set in a spiraling rhodium-plated frame. As with all of this designer’s creations, this 1940s piece  is well-constructed with a hefty weight. I’ve shown this jewel positioned in different ways, so you can choose which you prefer. Note that the Barclay’s name rather than the maker’s is stamped on this jewel.

Emerald, Diamanté & Sterling Dress Clip

    , ,
This vintage lapel pin is beautiful in design and construction, and wearable in many ways. It has faceted emerald-cut and round emerald-glass stones, in sharp contrast to the diamantés and rhodium-plated sterling silver setting. This color combination is rich and versatile. You can wear this jewel on the shoulder or lapel of a jacket, on the shoulder of a dress or sweater, or on a hat or a scarf. The hinged, double-prong fastener works best on weighty fabrics. Although this piece is marked, I cannot identify the maker. The design and use of sterling make me think it’s from the mid-1940s. But I don’t think these details matter – this clip is stunning!

Gemstone Crescent Earrings by De Rosa

    , ,
These crescent earrings with gemstone-colored glass stones were made by Ralph De Rosa. The gems are graduated in size and enhanced with an inner ring of diamantés. The variety of colors makes these ear clips very versatile. Moreover, the faux diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire and topaz form the word dearest, making these earrings acrostic (i.e., the initials of the stones form a word or name). This type of sentimental jewelry was very popular in the 19th century Victorian era, a style that inspired some 1940s jewelry designers. De Rosa created a Dearest series, which included brooches, in 1949. This maker's pieces are always exceptionally well-made and hard-to-find. A pair of clip cushions is included with this purchase.

Gold 1940s Cuff Bracelet by Forstner

    , ,
This vintage cuff bracelet is a variation of Forstner’s flexible bracelets, a popular style in the 1940s. This piece is formed from a tapering double-row with a decorative, fixed buckle. The polished finish of the center buckle adds a nice contrast to the coiled sides. Jewelry by Forstner was very well-made and has retained its quality. Note that this piece is gold-filled, which means it has a thicker layer of gold than a piece that is gold-plated. This cuff is especially nice because the construction allows it to fit small- to medium-size wrists. Please note that dark areas in the photos are only reflections from the camera. Milk Glass Bead, Diamanté & Gold Earrings by Miriam Haskell

    , , ,
These milk glass earrings with beads and disks, rondelles, and gold-tone findings have a real Machine Age-look and associated movement. However, the use of French ear clips dates them to the late-1940s, and the white beads may take them into the 1950s, when white jewelry was extremely popular. I still consider this pair to be Art Deco in style, and I’ve seen the same motif used by this designer (Frank Hess) on earlier Miriam Haskell pieces. Whenever they were made, these ear clips are lots of fun! I saw them in an entirely new, bright, and glamorous light when they were chosen to walk the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. See them on the model who looked stunning in a bridal jumpsuit with skirt. You don't have to be a bride to add glamour to an ensemble with these fabulous earrings!

    , , ,
This Sceptron brooch with matching earrings feature rose-gold-plated sterling silver set with large, faceted, triangular sapphire-glass stones and diamanté accents. This set is a wonderful example of the Retro Modern style of the 1940s. I couldn’t decide if the brooch should be worn horizontally or vertically until I saw Anne Baxter wearing one like it in the 1946 movie Angel on my Shoulder. Hers was perfectly placed in the vertical position at the base of her V-neckline. She even wore the matching earrings. The pin has a roll-over safety clasp, and the earrings are screw-backs. I’ve included a photo of the brooch in the horizontal position, so you can decide if you prefer it that way. A similar piece was shown in a 1945 wholesaler’s catalog. The page was entitled “New Pink Gold Finish on Sterling Silver — Styled by Master Craftsmen” (who were not named). The brooch was $28.50 retail, and the earrings were $13.50, or $42.00 for the set. (While I don’t have income statistics for the mid-1940s, to put these prices in perspective, the U.S. government reported that by 1950, the average American household’s weekly income was about $81.) This well-made set was not inexpensive.
