1950s Jewelry

About 1950s Jewelry

This authentic 1950s jewelry features amazing art glass, decorative beads, imaginative color combinations, and textured metals. Single- and multi-strand necklaces, cluster earrings, pendant earrings, brooches, bracelets, and sets are included. You will find fabulous fakes – imitations of large-scale fine jewelry – as well as graceful and classic tailored pieces. Gold-tone was more popular than silver-tone in this decade, when clothes that emphasized the female figure were in vogue. Another significant characteristic of the 1950s, other than the ubiquitous simple strand of pearls, was the preference for all accessories – jewels, gloves, handbags, shoes, and hats – to be color coordinated.

Alice Caviness brooch with amethyst & peridot flower petals

Amethyst & Peridot Flower 1950s Alice Caviness Brooch

    , ,
This Alice Caviness brooch from the 1950s has navettes and round glass stones in shades of amethyst and peridot. They are layered like the petals of a flower, with a lovely art-glass stone in both colors at the center. The setting is gold-tone with a roll-over safety clasp. This color combination is unusual and serene. The darkening of the metal in some spots does not diminish the beauty of this piece. I think this designer’s work is often overlooked.

Citrine, Golden Topaz & Mother-of-Pearl Brooch & Earrings Set

    , , ,
This vintage wreath brooch and earrings set by Alice Caviness features amazing layers of components wired onto a decorative brass frame. Included are citrine- glass stones in multiple shapes and sizes, faceted golden-topaz beads, mother-of-pearl disks, aurora borealis diamanté, and textured brass leaves. The jeweled frame of the brooch is mounted on another that holds the pin and roll-over safety clasp; each earring has a round filigree back with the ear clip. The complexity of the design and construction seen here are often present in this maker’s work, which I believe is underrated. This set is definitely not for the faint-hearted! I will include the matching bracelet, which has only three of its four strands of beads, but it is wearable. Scroll down to see a similar pair of earrings by Caviness.

Citrine, Golden Topaz & Mother-of-Pearl Earrings

    , ,
These citrine and topaz earrings by Alice Caviness are a colorful and complex design. They feature layers of citrine- and golden-topaz-glass beads along with aurora borealis diamantés, mother-of-pearl disks, and textured brass leaves. These elements are wired onto a brass mesh back, which is mounted on a filigree scalloped-edged disk. This is the type of creation that leads me to say that this maker is underrated. These ear clips are just plain fun! Scroll down to see a similar pair of earrings with matching brooch, also by Caviness. Beautiful jewels for women who wear warm colors.

Diamanté & Gold Starfish Brooch by Alice Caviness

    , , ,
This vintage starfish brooch is bold and dazzling. The aurora borealis diamantés in the gold-tone setting take on the color of the metal, catch the light, and seem to dance. The brooch has a roll-over safety clasp. Although women in the 1950s typically wore matching sets of jewelry, you don't have to do that. Just add gold studs or hoops. Consider these ear clips each shaped like one of the creature's arms a bonus. This jewel is versatile and guaranteed to get you noticed! What an imaginative adornment for a bride's hair or veil!

Onyx & Crystal Bi-color Bead Alice Caviness Earrings

    , ,
These Alice Caviness earrings have clusters of black- and clear-glass bi-colored beads. Some have caps of silver-tone filigree, while other caps are solid metal. These ear clips were designed in the starburst or atomic motif that was popular in the 1950s, yet they are so versatile and wearable now! In fact, these earrings walked the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. The designer paired them – unexpectedly, yet perfectly – with a 1930s German Art Deco bracelet (which is no longer available).

Turquoise & Sapphire Earrings by Alice Caviness

    , ,
These vintage turquoise glass earrings are an imaginative 1950s design by Alice Caviness. An unusual textured turquoise stone shaped like a thick button with some sparkle is the centerpiece. Glass beads in sapphire blue (coated with aurora borealis) and turquoise set in gold-tone filigree surround half of the turquoise center. The components are mounted (wired?) onto a filigree back that holds the ear clip. The earrings face each other, so they beautifully frame the face when worn. This pair showcases this designer’s clever mix of colors and materials.
