1950s Jewelry

About 1950s Jewelry

This authentic 1950s jewelry features amazing art glass, decorative beads, imaginative color combinations, and textured metals. Single- and multi-strand necklaces, cluster earrings, pendant earrings, brooches, bracelets, and sets are included. You will find fabulous fakes – imitations of large-scale fine jewelry – as well as graceful and classic tailored pieces. Gold-tone was more popular than silver-tone in this decade, when clothes that emphasized the female figure were in vogue. Another significant characteristic of the 1950s, other than the ubiquitous simple strand of pearls, was the preference for all accessories – jewels, gloves, handbags, shoes, and hats – to be color coordinated.

Amethyst & Diamanté 1950s Silver Leaf Brooch by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
This silver leaf brooch is an unusual and elegant 1950s creation by Miriam Haskell. It has pale-amethyst-glass nuggets set on a bed of layered, etched silver-tone leaves. Diamanté and beads of pale lavender and clear glass also adorn this luscious piece. I love the way the leaves curl around the large stones. This amazing brooch was in my personal collection, and I am now reluctantly offering it to you.

    Baroque Pearl French 1950s Earrings

    , ,
These baroque pearl earrings have a large, cream-colored glass pearl center encircled by a ring of small, matching round pearls. Though these 1950s earrings are unsigned, the construction (especially the ear-clip mechanism) and materials are consistent with those used by Louis Rousselet. (His pieces were usually only signed with paper hang tags.) These earrings would make a lovely accessory for daytime, evening, or bridal/wedding/prom wear.

Black enamel & diamante rose brooch
    USD$375.00

Black Enamel & Diamanté ‘Rose of Seville’ Brooch & Earrings

    , , ,
In this vintage rose brooch, Boucher crafted a lovely three-dimensional flower in black-enameled lattice trimmed with round diamanté. The stem of the rose is adorned with baguettes. The rhodium-plated setting closes with a roll-over safety clasp. The matching ear clips, which are just as well-designed, are a bonus. This incredibly-detailed 1950s set deserves its elegant name: Rose of Seville. Wear the brooch with real or faux diamond stud earrings. Or, if you like the style of the decade, wear the pieces together. Either approach will make your outfit memorable. Dazzling jewels for those who like to wear cool colors.

Blue Bead 2-Strand Choker by Hattie Carnegie

    , ,
This blue bead choker necklace is made from the unusual, high-quality beads typically used by Hattie Carnegie. These blue bead earrings by Hattie Carnegie are an imaginative example of the style that was so popular in the 1950s. They are formed by clusters of blue-glass beads in varying shapes, tones, sizes and finishes. The combination adds dimension to these ear clips. • Brown and gold topaz earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli

    USD$185.00

Brown & Golden Topaz Pendant Earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli

    , ,
These brown and gold topaz earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli feature multiple stones in a gold-tone setting. At the top, a large, faceted, round golden-topaz-glass stone is positioned to adorn your earlobe. This stone is linked to a smaller, faceted, round brown-topaz-glass stone, which is connected to the setting of the pendant. This focal point – the pendant – is a large, faceted, open-back, brown-topaz-glass stone in an ornate setting. Its top is crowned with diamanté; the bottom rests on a scroll accented with another brown topaz. Please note that the dark striations in the large stones shown by my camera are not visible when the earrings are worn. Though not signed with the maker’s name, these ear clips are marked with the utility patent for one type of finding Schiaparelli used. The design of these pendants is undoubtedly hers – the matching signed bracelet has been sold. A perfect pair for those who wear warm colors.

    USD$475.00

Brown Topaz & Citrine 1950s Schreiner Brooch & Earrings Set

    , , , ,
This Shreiner brooch, the centerpiece of this 1950s set, features huge, multi-faceted, oval brown-topaz glass stones. They are accented with layers of citrine and clear inverted glass stones, all in elaborate gold-tone settings. Even if the pieces weren't signed, the gorgeous glass, inverted stones, ornate settings, and donut-hole ear clips scream SCHREINER! This great color combination is stunning in any season. The earrings face each other, to frame your face. The dome-shaped brooch, which has a roll-over safety clasp, can also be worn as a pendant. USD$295.00

Citrine & Diamanté Spray on Gold Leaf Brooch

    , ,
This citrine pin by Elsa Schiaparelli is a lovely example of 1950s tailored jewelry. A richly-textured, gold-plated leaf forms the base. The top layer has citrine-glass-stone flowers with pavé silver-tone stems. The level of detail is superb: in addition to the elaborate, layered construction, the leaf has visible veins and a furled bottom on its front as well as texture on the back. I’m not sure which way this jewel was intended to be worn, so I’m showing both orientations in the photos – take a look and decide which you prefer.

  • Vintage wreath brooch & earrings set by Alice Caviness
Oval brooch w/layers of stones & leaves
    USD$395.00

Citrine, Golden Topaz & Mother-of-Pearl Brooch & Earrings Set

    , , ,
This vintage wreath brooch and earrings set by Alice Caviness features amazing layers of components wired onto a decorative brass frame. Included are citrine- glass stones in multiple shapes and sizes, faceted golden-topaz beads, mother-of-pearl disks, aurora borealis diamanté, and textured brass leaves. The jeweled frame of the brooch is mounted on another that holds the pin and roll-over safety clasp; each earring has a round filigree back with the ear clip. The complexity of the design and construction seen here are often present in this maker’s work, which I believe is underrated. This set is definitely not for the faint-hearted! I will include the matching bracelet, which has only three of its four strands of beads, but it is wearable. Scroll down to see a similar pair of earrings by Caviness.

These citrine and topaz earrings by Alice Caviness are a colorful and complex design. They feature layers of citrine- and golden-topaz-glass beads along with aurora borealis diamantés, mother-of-pearl disks, and textured brass leaves. These elements are wired onto a brass mesh back, which is mounted on a filigree scalloped-edged disk. This is the type of creation that leads me to say that this maker is underrated. , , , ,
This Schiaparelli earrings and brooch set from the 1950s features a large citrine glass stone surrounded by tiny pearls in an elaborate, antiqued, gold-plated setting. Notice how the faceting of each citrine ― known as a dentelle ― forms an eight-pointed star design. Schiaparelli frequently used this cut of glass stone in her pieces. This vintage rock crystal necklace and earrings set comes in its original box. (Rock crystal is a natural mineral.) Made in the 1950s, this set is reminiscent of similar pieces made in the Art Deco era. The necklace closes with a filigree fish-hook clasp. The original screw-backs on the earrings were converted to sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. The trademark ELCO was registered to the Milglo Jewelry Co. in New York City.

  • Flower-shaped diamante earrings by Miriam Haskell
Miriam Haskell ear clips with diamante centers and beaded petals
    USD$245.00

Diamanté & Bead Flower 1950s Earrings by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
These flower-shaped diamante earrings are much more beautiful than the photos convey. Six petals formed from tiny clear- and grey-glass bi-color beads wired together surround each large, faceted, round diamanté center. Designed by Frank Hess, this elegant pair features the style and workmanship that characterize Miriam Haskell pieces. The use of French ear clips dates these earrings to no earlier than the late-1940s, but I think the style is more 1950s. You can wear this pair for a special occasion or with everyday attire – they go with everything! They even sparkled on the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019!

  • Gold disk earrings and brooch w/pavé by Pennino Bros.
    Gold disk & diamante brooch
    USD$225.00

Diamanté & Gold Disk Brooch & Earrings Set by Pennino Bros.

    , , , ,
These gold disk earrings and brooch were made by Pennino Bros. in the 1950s. Pavé disks intersect and overlay the scored disks of gold-tone metal, which remind me of open fans. The layered design and construction of this set are characteristic of exceptional makers like this one. The brooch closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Note that about 1/4″ of the pavé disk on each ear clip will sit below your earlobe. Wear these lovely earrings and brooch together or separately, to create different looks. Your own real or faux diamond studs or hoop earrings would also work well with this brooch.

  • Coro necklace with gold & diamanté centerpiece
Corocraft gold necklace by Adolph Katz
    USD$275.00

Diamanté & Gold Snake Chain 1950s Coro Necklace

    , ,
This Coro necklace features gold-plated fretwork embellished with rows of gold-ended baguettes as its centerpiece, which reminds me of a cornucopia. A pear-shaped diamanté adorns the tail of the hook-and-tail closure of the snake chain. This piece is another great example of the work Adolph Katz produced for Coro’s high-end line. What’s interesting is that this piece appears in an October 1, 1953 Vogue ad with the following copy:  “excitingly beautiful as Paris by night … Vendome by Coro“.  (Vendome later became another one of the company’s high-end lines.) Also of interest is the difference of the clasp on the necklace versus that shown on the design patent.

    , , ,
This vintage starfish brooch is bold and dazzling. The aurora borealis diamantés in the gold-tone setting take on the color of the metal, catch the light, and seem to dance. The brooch has a roll-over safety clasp. Although women in the 1950s typically wore matching sets of jewelry, you don't have to do that. Just add gold studs or hoops. Consider these ear clips each shaped like one of the creature's arms a bonus. This jewel is versatile and guaranteed to get you noticed! What an imaginative adornment for a bride's hair or veil!

Diamanté 1950s Expansion Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
This expansion bracelet is unlike any you've ever seen! Four rows of rhodium-plated curved-top links set with diamanté stretch to allow you to put on the bracelet – it has no clasp. What's amazing is that the mechanism for stretching the piece – a series of springs – is concealed. The last photo shows part of the British utility patent for this construction. This bracelet is the only piece in this group with the 'SIMEX' trademark. I can’t figure out how to tell you the size of this piece other than how it fits me. My wrist is 6 ¾”, and the bracelet fits me fine. It stretches to the diameter of the widest part of my hand – 8 ½” – that’s required to put it on. Scroll down to see complementary necklaces.

Diamanté Floral Brooch by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
Whether you’re looking for a wedding dress brooch or something unique and elegant for every day, this sparkly jewel is for you. It is identical to the “central motif” of a necklace shown in the Gordon & Pamfiloff book on this maker. There the centerpiece is described as “silver metal leaves edged with rose montées and two large clear rhinestones surrounded by smaller rhinestones”. While the necklace is much more elaborate, this Frank Hess-designed 1950s piece is perfect for today, any time of day! Diamanté Vintage Bib Necklace

    , ,
This vintage bib necklace has a 3 ½”-wide centerpiece of tapered, curved links of channel-set diamanté and sprays of single stones. The setting is rhodium-plated white metal. An adjustable bar link chain with a spring-ring clasp completes the piece. This type of adjustable clasp – instead of the North American-style J-hook – was used by many German jewelry makers in the 1950s. The design and construction of this piece remind me of the work of Schreiber & Hiller, but this necklace is unmarked. Nonetheless, I think it was German-made. Emerald & Diamanté Double Clip Brooch by Hattie Carnegie

    , ,
This sparkly brooch from Hattie Carnegie’s New York fashion house is both beautiful and practical. It has two hearts formed from three layers of diamanté topped with large, round, faceted emerald-glass stones. The setting is rhodium-plated, and the color combination is striking. The layers make this piece very three-dimensional. It can be worn as a brooch (at different angles, as shown) or as two separate dress clips. The photos show a third option: one clip worn as a pendant on a sterling silver chain (which is not included). A white-gold one would also work well. How’s that for a three-in-one jewel!

This late-1950s pineapple bead necklace illustrates a typical Carnegie theme – flora – with a clever combination of materials. Textured, gold-tone pineapple-shaped beads alternating with small carnelian-glass beads form the main necklace. Gold-tone beads in various shapes combined with onyx- and carnelian-glass beads dangle from the entire length of the piece. This elaborate fringe necklace closes with a pineapple-shaped concealed clasp. This jewel is the perfect adornment for a scoop-neck or strapless garment.

These Christian Dior earrings feature textured, gold-tone ropes intertwined with faceted golden-topaz and green-tourmaline glass stones and aurora borealis diamantés. (Swarovski invented aurora borealis – a coating that adds iridescence to faceted stones and beads. Dior was one of the first designers to adopt it in his designs.) The color combination and elaborate hook-and-eye construction of these 1950s ear clips are worthy of the maker’s name. Elegant, classic, and perfect for a woman who likes to wear warm colors. Green Bead 2-Strand French Necklace

    , ,
This green glass bead necklace is just gorgeous! Two strands of graduated beads in a soft-green with swirls of color form this French 1950s jewel. I think it was made by Louis Rousselet. (As you may know, few of his pieces were signed directly on the jewelry – instead, a paper hang tag was used.) The clasp, which is the type he typically used, is topped with his well-known button-shaped bead. This necklace from my personal collection was recently professionally restrung. The oval-shaped brooch has two nuggets surrounded by faux pearls and glass stones in amethyst, sapphire, and citrine. These embellishments are in various shapes and sizes. An overlay of gold-plated filigree flowers with tiny sapphire centers complete the brooch. It closes with a roll-over safety clap. The ear clips each have one jade nugget with a semi-circle of the same colorful stones. The earrings face each other, so they will frame your face to perfection. The combination of elements and the complexity of design make this set very special. It’s a great example of Hobé’s ’50s Glam style and suits today’s preference for statement jewelry. This pair was made by Louis Rousselet, according to Ginger Moro (the author of European Designer Jewelry and a Rousselet expert). Though marked "Charlin" on the ear clips, these pendants are "a re-issue of an earlier design from the '50s using vintage glass beads and pearls", stated Moro in correspondence, when I bought these earrings from her. The colors and design make this pair very versatile and easy to wear for day or evening.

Clusters of tiny faux pearls with blown-glass flowers and leaves form these 1950s ear clips. However, the findings I'm familiar with would have been too small for this creation. Please note that although these earrings are not mirror images, the lack of symmetry – which is not unusual in hand-strung pieces – does not detract from their lovely appearance. On top are layers of ruby- and emerald-blown-glass beads and additional pear-shaped stones. The components are wired onto a silver-tone filigree back with a trombone clasp. Probably made in France in the late-1950s to early-1960s, this substantial piece is nearly one-inch high! Two stones have darkened a bit, but they are much brighter than the photos indicate. This jewel still has plenty of sparkle!

These blue sapphire costume earrings feature translucent poured glass in a delicately-detailed gold-tone setting. The design is timeless and versatile! These 1950s ear clips were one of the Hattie Carnegie creations chosen by the designer to walk the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. He paired them with an Art Deco necklace in a similar blue worn by a model in a black-and-white houndstooth evening gown. I confess that I was both surprised and delighted with this choice, and the audience was definitely pleased. Although that necklace is no longer available, scroll down to see a similar piece.
