1950s Jewelry

About 1950s Jewelry

This authentic 1950s jewelry features amazing art glass, decorative beads, imaginative color combinations, and textured metals. Single- and multi-strand necklaces, cluster earrings, pendant earrings, brooches, bracelets, and sets are included. You will find fabulous fakes – imitations of large-scale fine jewelry – as well as graceful and classic tailored pieces. Gold-tone was more popular than silver-tone in this decade, when clothes that emphasized the female figure were in vogue. Another significant characteristic of the 1950s, other than the ubiquitous simple strand of pearls, was the preference for all accessories – jewels, gloves, handbags, shoes, and hats – to be color coordinated.

Emerald Bead & Rondelle Chandelier Earrings by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
These Miriam Haskell earrings feature three emerald-glass balls dangling from clear-glass tubes with rondelles at the center of blue-green glass beads. In typical Haskell fashion, the bluish-emerald-glass bead at the top is surrounded by a circle of tiny clear-glass beads, and the dangling emerald beads have clear-glass tips. These all-original earrings have adjustable screw-backs (the combination screw and lever) and are signed. Great color and great movement!

Gold disk earrings and brooch w/pavé by Pennino Bros.
    USD$275.00

Gold Disk & Diamanté Brooch & Earrings Set by Pennino Bros.

    , , , ,
These gold disk earrings and brooch were made by Pennino Bros. in the 1950s. Pavé disks intersect and overlay the scored disks of gold-tone metal, which remind me of open fans. The layered design and construction of this set are characteristic of exceptional makers like this one. The brooch closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Note that about 1/4″ of the pavé disk on each ear clip will sit below your earlobe. Wear these lovely earrings and brooch together or separately, to create different looks. Your own real or faux diamond studs or hoop earrings would work well with this brooch. Wear the ear clips as shoe embellishments.

Golden Topaz, Green Tourmaline & Diamanté Christian Dior Earrings

    , ,
These Christian Dior earrings feature textured, gold-tone ropes intertwined with faceted golden-topaz and green-tourmaline glass stones and aurora borealis diamantés. (Swarovski invented aurora borealis – a coating that adds iridescence to faceted stones and beads. Dior was one of the first designers to adopt it in his designs.) The color combination and elaborate hook-and-eye construction of these 1950s ear clips are worthy of the maker’s name. Elegant, classic, and perfect for a woman who likes to wear warm colors. • Green glass bead necklace by Louis Rousselet
    Front of 2-strand French necklace
    USD$495.00

    Green Bead 2-Strand French Necklace

    , ,
This green glass bead necklace is just gorgeous! Two strands of graduated beads in a soft-green with swirls of color form this French 1950s jewel. I think it was made by Louis Rousselet. (As you may know, few of his pieces were signed directly on the jewelry – instead, a paper hang tag was used.) The box clasp topped with a button-shaped bead is one type of closure he often used. It can be seen in books with photos of Rousselet jewels. This necklace from my personal collection was recently professionally restrung. A timeless addition to your jewelry wardrobe.

This pearl flower brooch by Miriam Haskell features a trio that forms a semi-circle. Each flower has a grey pearl center and engraved silver-tone petals. The components are wired onto filigree plaques. This jewel closes with a roll-over safety clasp. I’ve photographed the brooch in the vertical and horizontal positions, so you can decide which you like better. Great color and lovely detail! Please note that the camera lens has magnified a tiny blemish on one of the center leaves that does not detract from the beauty of this piece.

  • Brooch w/jade glass nuggets, gemstones & pearls
Gemstone brooch & earrings set by Hobé
    USD$295.00

Jade Art Glass, Gemstone & Pearl Brooch & Earrings Set by Hobé

    , , ,
This gemstone brooch and earrings set has large jade-art-glass nuggets set in gold-tone metal as its focal point. The oval-shaped brooch has two nuggets surrounded by faux pearls and glass stones in amethyst, sapphire, and citrine. These embellishments are in various shapes and sizes. An overlay of gold-plated filigree flowers with tiny sapphire centers complete the brooch. It closes with a roll-over safety clap. The ear clips each have one jade nugget with a semi-circle of the same colorful stones. The earrings face each other, so they will frame your face to perfection. The combination of elements and the complexity of design make this set very special. It’s a great example of Hobé’s ’50s Glam style and suits today’s preference for statement jewelry. Create different looks by wearing the pieces separately. The colors are bold and beautiful!

  • Jade bead earrings by Louis Rousselet
Earrings with clusters of jade glass beads
    USD$395.00

Jade Bead Dangling Earrings by Louis Rousselet

    , ,
These jade bead earrings feature clusters of vibrant dark-apple-green-glass barrels cascading from a white-metal back. Some of the beads have striations. Though unsigned, these delightful 1950s creations feature the same horseshoe-shaped ear clip typically used by Louis Rousselet. What’s more significant is the way the earrings are constructed. The backs have a "metallic support in the shape of a rosette" to which the beads are wired. Florence Müller (in Costume Jewelry for Haute Couture) cites this "rosette" as a "signature" of this maker’s work, which was rarely signed on the jewelry. These colorful, playful and unusual earrings are perfect for any occasion. You can see them on my favorite model in this blog post.

  • Milk glass earrings with rondelles
Miriam Haskell earrings with milk glass beads & disks
    USD$345.00

Milk Glass Bead, Diamanté & Gold Earrings by Miriam Haskell

    , , ,
These milk glass earrings with beads and disks, rondelles, and gold-tone findings have a real Machine Age-look and associated movement. However, the use of French ear clips dates them to the late-1940s, and the white beads may take them into the 1950s, when white jewelry was extremely popular. I still consider this pair to be Art Deco in style, and I’ve seen the same motif used by this designer (Frank Hess) on earlier Miriam Haskell pieces. Whenever they were made, these ear clips are lots of fun! I saw them in an entirely new, bright, and glamorous light when they were chosen to walk the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. See them on the model who looked stunning in a bridal jumpsuit with skirt. You don't have to be a bride to add glamour to an ensemble with these fabulous earrings!

Onyx & Aurora Borealis Brooch by Elsa Schiaparelli

    , ,
This vintage rhinestone brooch is a stunning, three-dimensional 1950s jewel by Elsa Schiaparelli. It is formed by three layered flowers. The centers are clusters of onyx-glass beads that sit atop petals of onyx glass and Aurora Borealis diamantés. This iridescent coating on the navettes reflects spectacular colors, creates a sense of movement, and gives this piece so much life. These effects are hard to capture in photos. , ,
These Alice Caviness earrings have clusters of black- and clear-glass bi-colored beads. Some have caps of silver-tone filigree, while other caps are solid metal. These ear clips were designed in the starburst or atomic motif that was popular in the 1950s, yet they are so versatile and wearable now! Onyx, Emerald & Diamanté Dangle Earrings

    , ,
These diamanté dangle earrings are inset with emerald enamel accents and have additional sparkling stones at the earlobes. Onyx-glass hoops form the bottom of these lovely and versatile pendants. The ear wires for pierced ears are original, but the lever backs are unmarked. These earrings are probably European in origin. Though Art Deco in style, something about this pair makes me think they may be from a later Revival era. Nevertheless, they are beautiful! • Art glass earrings in pastels, from France
Pale pink, green & blue glass bead earrings
    USD$375.00

Pastel Art Glass Earrings from France

    , ,
These art glass earrings feature pale pink, green and blue beads that dangle on chains suspended from a pink glass button. The pastel-colored beads in different shapes and sizes have white striations. These 1950s ear clips are lovely and versatile, and have lots of movement. Though unsigned, they resemble pieces made by Louis Rousselet. The clues are the glass button at the earlobe and the beauty and uniqueness of the beads. (He often topped necklace box clasps with a button-shaped glass bead.) I am not certain about the maker, however, because of the style of the ear clip. Nonetheless, these jewels are fun!
