Alice Caviness Jewelry

This nice selection of Alice Caviness jewelry features brooches, earrings, bracelets, and sets from the 1950s. Using high-quality materials and techniques such as sterling, filigree, expensive art glass, and hand-set stones, Caviness and her designers produced bold and imaginative pieces. Located in New York City, the company designed, manufactured, and imported costume jewelry from 1943-1987. It was sold only in exclusive boutiques around the U.S. In addition to Manhattan, the company had showrooms in Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Caviness jewelry adorned fashion models in photo shoots published in The New York Times and Vogue. Read more about Alice Caviness.

Amethyst & Peridot Flower 1950s Brooch by Alice Caviness

    , ,

This 1950s brooch has navettes and round glass stones in shades of amethyst and peridot. They are layered like the petals of a flower, with a lovely art-glass stone in both colors at the center. The setting is gold-tone with a roll-over safety clasp. This color combination is unusual and serene. I think this designer’s work is often overlooked.

Citrine, Golden Topaz & Mother of Pearl 1950s Brooch & Earrings Set by Alice Caviness

    , ,

This 1950s set by Alice Caviness features amazing layers of components wired onto a decorative brass frame. Included are citrine glass stones in multiple shapes and sizes, faceted golden-topaz beads, mother-of-pearl disks, aurora borealis diamanté, and textured brass leaves. The brooch is shaped like an oval wreath, with the jeweled frame mounted on another that holds the pin and roll-over safety clasp. Each earring has a jeweled frame mounted on a round filigree back with the ear clip. The complexity of the design and construction seen here are often present in this maker’s work, which I believe is underrated. This set is definitely not for the faint-hearted! I will include the matching bracelet, which has only three of its four strands of beads, but it is definitely wearable. Scroll down to see a similar pair of earrings by the same maker.

Citrine, Golden Topaz & Mother of Pearl 1950s Earrings by Alice Caviness

    , ,

These 1950s ear clips by Alice Caviness feature layers of citrine and golden-topaz glass beads along with aurora borealis diamanté, mother-of-pearl disks, and textured brass leaves. These elements are wired onto a brass mesh back, which is mounted on a filigree scalloped-edged disk. This is the type of creation by this maker that leads me to say that she is under-rated. These earrings are just plain fun! Scroll down to see a similar pair of earring with matching brooch, also by Caviness.

    , ,

This 1950s set by Alice Caviness is bold and dazzling. The aurora borealis rhinestones in the gold-tone setting take on the color of the metal, catch the light, and seem to dance. The starfish-shaped brooch has a roll-over safety clasp. Each ear clip is in the shape of one of the “arms”. This set is perfect for an outfit in a warm color palette and is guaranteed to get you noticed!

Onyx & Crystal Bi-color Bead 1950s Earrings by Alice Caviness

    , ,

Clusters of black and clear glass bi-colored beads form these 1950s ear clips by Alice Caviness. Some of the beads have caps of silver-tone filigree, while other caps are solid metal. These earrings were designed in the starburst or atomic motif that was popular in the 1950s, yet they are so versatile and wearable now! What’s curious is the way the earrings are signed: the maker’s name is stamped on the back of one ear clip and applied to an oval cartouche on the mounting of the other earring.

Sterling Floral Link 1940s Bracelet by Alice Caviness

    , ,

This sterling silver link bracelet by Alice Caviness features tiny flowers and leaves. It closes with the old-style spring-ring clasp. Caviness pieces are hard to date – I’m guessing this one is from the 1940s, when romanticism was a popular jewelry motif. This delicate bracelet can go anywhere.

Turquoise & Sapphire 1950s Earrings by Alice Caviness

    , ,

An unusual textured turquoise glass stone is the centerpiece of these 1950s earrings by Alice Caviness. It is shaped like a thick button and has some sparkle in it. Aurora borealis sapphire glass stones and turquoise glass beads set in gold-tone filigree surround half of the turquoise center. These beads are mounted (wired?) onto a filigree back that holds the ear clip. The earrings face each other, so they beautifully frame the face when worn. This pair showcase this designer’s clever mix of colors and materials.
