Amethyst, Diamanté & Rose-Gold Bow 1940s Brooch by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
This striking, two-layer rose-gold bow brooch by Pennino is a lovely example of the Retro Modern style. The top is a pavé ribbon of rhodium-plated metal that's edged with faceted, oval amethyst-glass stones topped with tiny diamanté. The center is cinched with rose-gold plated metal. The second layer is a furled rose-gold ribbon that's attached to the top with a tiny screw. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. This brooch is not flat – the four corners of the bottom layer fold under, as curls of ribbon or fabric would. The back shows the high-quality, complex construction characteristic of this maker. Scroll down to see a variation of this design in rhodium-plated metal with sapphires.

Aquamarine & Vermeil Sterling Flower Petal Earrings by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
These lively flower petal earrings with aquamarine-glass-stone centers were made by Pennino Bros. in the 1940s. The curled, flirty flower petals in gold-washed sterling silver are the same shape and finish this maker used in a series of 1947 brooches, called Sunburst. The stone settings are the same as their Bulrush brooch and earrings set from the same year. According to Brunialti, the patent pending mark on the earrings refers to the clip mechanism. These designs were not patented. These details are just for background – these ear clips are divine! And by facing each other, they frame your face to perfection.

Diamanté & Gold Disk 1950s Brooch & Earrings Set by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
Pavé disks intersect and overlay scored disks of gold-tone metal to form this classic 1950s brooch and earrings set by Pennino. The gold disks remind me of open fans. The layered design and construction of this set are characteristic of exceptional makers like this one. The brooch closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Note that about 1/4" of the pavé disk on each ear clip will sit below your earlobe. Wear the earrings and brooch together or separately, to create different looks. Your own real or faux diamond studs or hoop earrings would also work well with this brooch.

Diamanté & Sterling 1930s Lapel Watch by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
This amazing vintage lapel watch by Pennino is the ultimate in Art Deco design, with pavé and baguettes set in rhodium-plated sterling silver. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. And the best part is that the watch works! It has been cleaned by my expert watchmaker. The watch is attached to the brooch upside down, so you can read the time when you are wearing this piece. The numbers on the watch face are also SO Deco in design, and the original blue hour, minute and second hands are present. What an unusual and fantastic piece! Sapphire & Diamanté 1940s Bow Pennino Brooch

    , ,
The design and construction of this Pennino brooch from the late-1940s is so fine that I bought it for myself. Now I’m reluctantly offering it to a new home. The top layer features a pavé ribbon of rhodium-plated metal that’s edged with faceted, oval sapphire-glass stones topped with tiny diamanté, and cinched in the center with two tones of metal. The bottom layer is a rhodium-plated larger bow. It’s edged with thin rays ending with collet-set, tiny sapphire stones. The two layers are connected with a tiny screw, and the pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Pennino pieces are always exceptional, and this one is superb. Its quality rivals that of fine jewelry, but this one is available for a fraction of the cost! Scroll down to see a variation of this design in rose-gold with amethysts.
