Schreiber & Hiller Jewelry

German jewelers Schreiber & Hiller were in business from 1920-1993 in Pforzheim, a center for jewelry and watch-making for over 250 years. Many vintage costume jewelry collectors are familiar with their pieces from the 1930s (marked “DRGM 1138525”, for their patent) and the 1950s (marked “ESHA” – which represents the German pronunciation of the first letters of their company name – and “RANDEL”). This collection of bracelets, brooches, earrings, and necklaces feature many variations of their tank-track theme as well as a delightful array of color and material combinations. Black Bakelite & Diamanté 1930s Earrings by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

At the top of these 1930s earrings is a link with engraved sides that holds seven diamanté. At the bottom is another diamanté -set link flanked by black Bakelite on three sides. In the middle is a single stone. Each earring has a small chip of Bakelite at the bottom, but that minor flaw in no way detracts from their beauty. The original ear clips were converted to sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. Black Bakelite & Diamanté Flexible Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

Vintage Bakelite jewelry as beautiful as this German flexible bracelet from the 1930s is hard to find. It has vertical links of diamanté alternating with black Bakelite. The stones in this piece are relatively large – only four to each flat-top link. This Art Deco bracelet closes with a concealed clasp. Because one of the markings is “Patented” (an English word stamped by a German maker), I think this bracelet was intended for export. Black Bakelite & Diamanté Machine Age Necklace by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

I love the design of this Machine Age necklace! Six curved links set with diamanté alternate with black Bakelite links with roof-shaped (pointed) tops. Because the jeweled links are curved, the centerpiece follows the curve of your neck instead of laying out in a straight line. A scroll chain with a spring-ring-clasp completes this elegant and easy-to-wear necklace that I always enjoyed. Black Diamanté Vintage Tank Track Brooch by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

This vintage tank track brooch is an unusual application of this classic Machine Age pattern. Schreiber & Hiller have made it even more distinctive by using black diamanté channel-set in slender, slightly curved links on the outside and a double-row of smaller, slightly lighter stones inside. The difference in colors is very subtle. At 3 ¼” long, this piece is a fabulous and versatile example of the era. This brooch closes with a trombone clasp.

Diamanté & Bakelite Plaque Necklace by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

This plaque necklace made in Germany in the 1930s has tapered, curved links of diamanté on either side of a black Bakelite disk. It is topped with a large, claw-set diamanté surrounded by smaller stones. When laid out on a table, the necklace forms a wide v-shape. A scroll chain with a spring-ring clasp completes this beautiful piece from my personal collection. Although some stones have aged, this necklace still has lots of sparkle. Diamanté 1950s Expansion Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

This expansion bracelet is unlike any you’ve ever seen! Four rows of rhodium-plated curved-top links set with diamanté stretch to allow you to put on the bracelet – it has no clasp. What’s amazing is that the mechanism for stretching the piece – a series of springs – is concealed. The last photo shows part of the British utility patent for this construction. This bracelet is the only piece in this group with the ‘SIMEX’ trademark. I can’t figure out how to tell you the size of this piece other than how it fits me. My wrist is 6 ¾”, and the bracelet fits me fine. It stretches to the diameter of the widest part of my hand – 8 ½” – that’s required to put it on. Scroll down to see complementary necklaces.

Diamanté 1950s Tank Track Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

Diamanté 5-row Honeycomb Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

Art Deco fashion jewelry made in the 1930s in Germany was unlike anything produced by North American companies. The foundation of this maker’s designs is an oblong link that holds channel-set stones. With this bracelet, they have taken their link to another level. These flat, rhodium-plated links each hold three diamanté. A large stone is in the center, with a smaller stone on each side. The links form a honeycomb pattern. This bracelet has five rows; it closes with a concealed clasp and safety catch. Scroll down to see another bracelet by this maker in the same pattern with three rows.

Diamanté Lightning Bolt 1930s Brooch by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

This 1930s brooch by the German maker Schreiber & Hiller reminds me of a bolt of lightning, a popular theme in Machine Age jewelry of that decade. This piece is formed by seven flat-top links that are bent to form a sort of zig-zag shape. Long (3 ¼”) and lean, this unusual brooch closes with a trombone clasp. An elegant and unusual adornment for a jacket lapel. Scroll down to see coordinating bracelets.

Diamanté Tank Track German Necklace by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

This German necklace has three rows of flat-top links of diamanté. The edges of the links are engraved, and the clasp is the concealed type. The ageing of some stones doesn’t detract from the sparkle of this Machine Age piece. Schreiber & Hiller produced jewelry with many variations of this pattern. This particular design is the same as that of the sapphire and diamanté bracelet in this group. Scroll down to see it as well as two all-diamanté bracelets in a four-row, tank-track pattern, by the same maker.

Diamanté Vintage Link Necklace by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

With this vintage link necklace from the 1930s, the maker used curved links of diamanté in a tank-track pattern as the centerpiece. The jeweled links have rhodium-plated backs. A link-and-bar chain with a spring-ring clasp complete this Machine Age piece. Because this necklace was in my personal collection, I had it shortened. Its purchase includes four additional links, which are each about one-half-inch long. Scroll down to see some tank track bracelets, also by Schreiber & Hiller, to wear with this wonderful necklace.

Emerald & Diamanté Flexible Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,

This Art Deco emerald bracelet is a fine example of this maker’s art. The design is a pattern of three “roof-shaped” vertical links of channel-set diamanté followed by one with emerald glass stones. The stones are relatively large, and this bracelet is the widest I’ve seen from this company. The rhodium-plated links in this substantial piece are joined by a concealed mesh band that was patented by another German maker. This bracelet closes with a concealed clasp.
