    Quickview

Amethyst & Crystal Bead Long 1920s Necklace

    , ,
This 1920s necklace of alternating amethyst-glass and crystal beads was designed to complement the long-waisted, slim flapper silhouette but is equally fashionable today. This substantial piece has just been professionally restrung with knots and no clasp. Although the necklace was designed to be worn as a single long (35″) strand, you can wear it doubled if you have a slim neck. A pearl extender clasp (see the seventh photo), which makes the doubling possible, will be included with this necklace. This jewel looks great with the Amethyst Bead Long Art Deco Necklace, also weighty, shown in the last photo. Scroll down to see it and a selection of coordinating bracelets and earrings.

Amethyst & Diamanté 1930s Austrian Earrings

    , ,
These vintage Austrian earrings feature three rows of vertically-set stones. In the middle are two deep-amethyst baguettes with a round diamanté on top and a faceted, teardrop-shaped diamanté at the bottom. On either side of the middle, the pattern is repeated but with a single baguette. The setting is rhodium-plated metal shaped to hold the stones together, making each pendant one piece. A single, faceted, round diamanté sits at the earlobe. These 1930s Art Deco earrings are all-original screw-backs and can be modified for pierced ears. The color combination is rich, regal, and easy-to-wear.

    Amethyst & Sterling 1920s Bracelet

This vintage amethyst bracelet from the 1920s is a variation of the era’s line bracelet. Instead of the typical channel-set stones, this jewel's emerald-cut, pale-amethysts are prong-set atop open-back sterling-silver cups. This classic Art Deco bracelet closes with a concealed clasp. The glass stones are a lovely color, and the construction allows the light to pass through. Amethyst Bead Long 1920s Necklace

    , ,
This vintage amethyst bead necklace never goes out of style. It is a long (31”) strand of graduating faceted, deep-purple glass beads with crystal disk spacers. This piece has been professionally restrung without a clasp and has substantial weight. Made in the 1920s, it was designed to be worn as a single, long strand, to compliment the drop-waist fashion of the day. As an alternative, the third photo shows the necklace worn doubled, with the aid of a device called a pearl extender clasp (shown in the fifth photo). I will include one with this purchase. This necklace looks fabulous with another long 1920s necklace, which is also weighty, that is shown in the last photo. Black & Cream Galalith Bead Necklace

    , ,
This vintage bead necklace is a piece that's especially fun for summer. It has alternating larger and smaller black beads that culminate in a centerpiece of two plaques designed to look carved and two cream-colored cones separated by a black disk. Made from an early plastic (Bakelite or Galalith?), this necklace from 1925-1935 closes with an unusual push-in clasp. This piece is from my personal collection.

Black & White Bakelite Art Deco Dangle Earrings

    , ,
These Art Deco dangle earrings are an example of the whimsical type of jewelry that could be produced when the early plastics, such as Bakelite and Galalith, became available. Each earring features a trio of black-and-white cubes dangling from chrome bars and links. Two cubes are the same length, while the third is longer. These all-original earrings have ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears. The findings are unmarked, so I don’t know the metal content. Scroll down to see an equally fun matching bracelet.

Black Bakelite & Diamanté German Choker

    , ,
This vintage Bakelite necklace is probably from Germany. It has curved links of black Bakelite alternating with slightly larger curved links of channel-set diamanté. The components are threaded on a chain with metal spacers between each link. When laid out on a table, the necklace retains a slightly curved shape. The back of one of the Bakelite links has a small chip (shown in the last photo), but the appearance and integrity of the piece have not been compromised. This necklace was made for a slim neck, so please note the length (14 3/4") and check your neck size before purchasing this piece. The look of this necklace is Machine Age and very classy. Blue & Cream Carved Galalith Necklace

    , ,
Vintage plastic bead necklaces like this one were very popular in the Art Deco era. The beads were molded to simulate carving. What sets this 1930s necklace apart is the colors – dark blue on cream. This combination and the design are lovely and striking, and the different shapes of the beads add interest. Even the screw-in clasp forms a bead. I’m not sure what type of early plastic this piece is (possibly Galalith, the French equivalent of Bakelite) – it’s light, wonderful, and fun-to-wear in any case.

The ear wires with lever-backs for pierced ears are original to the earrings and unmarked. Chrysoprase, Marcasite & Sterling German Brooch

    , ,
This Art Deco marcasite brooch has three faceted chrysoprase (glass?) stones set in sterling silver. It exhibits typical German construction and their aesthetic of the 1920s-1930s. The 935 mark refers to a higher silver content than the sterling standard, which is 925 parts per 1000 – not uncommon in German pieces of the era. This brooch was in my personal collection and was among the first pieces I bought when I focused on Art Deco jewelry. You can wear this petite jewel at the throat of a blouse or on the collar of a jacket to great effect. Scroll down to see Art Deco chrysoprase earrings that look lovely with this piece. Chrysoprase, Onyx, & Ruby Disk Choker with Rondelles

    , ,
This Art Deco choker features faceted, opaque chrysoprase, onyx and ruby glass disks and rondelles. The components are strung on metal chain. The necklace closes with a screw-in clasp formed by two of the disks. Based on the construction of this piece, I think it is European in origin. As often happens with necklaces made like this one, the chain has stretched. I don't recommend having a jeweler cut the excess – just keep it at the back. This colorful and versatile necklace can be worn with many Art Deco jewels, depending on the color you wish to emphasize — scroll down to see a selection. Or wear your real or faux diamond studs to complete the look.

The design and construction of this tiered necklace, a variation on the 1920s chicklet-style, is first class. Golden yellow, square-cut glass stones alternate with oblong crystals to form the necklace and tiered centerpiece. Round dangling citrine-glass stones add the movement that was so essential in the Art Deco era. All of the stones are faceted and mounted in decorated, silver-tone metal. The construction makes me think this piece was made in Europe. This divine jewel, which I initially purchased for myself, closes with a spring-ring clasp. Diamanté Link German 1930s Bracelet

    , ,
This diamanté silver bracelet has two rows of long, slender, slightly-curved links of channel-set stones. Each link is trapezoid in shape. A single row of slimmer, short, pointed-top connecting links is in the middle. The setting is rhodium-plated white metal. This bracelet closes with a concealed clasp and safety chain. This piece is unsigned, but it reminds me of the work of the German company Schreiber & Hiller. I think this bracelet was made in the 1930s, but it could have been made around 1950, when German companies were re-emerging after the war. Scroll down to see some complementary pieces.

    Diamanté Tank Track German Bracelet

This German bracelet features four rows of slightly curved, tapered links channel-set with diamanté. The rhodium-plated setting closes with a concealed clasp and safety catch. Although this piece is unsigned, the tank-track pattern and the bracelet’s construction remind me of pieces made by German companies in the 1930s. This bracelet may have been made in the early 1950s, when the German companies were re-establishing themselves after the war. This bracelet was made for a slim wrist. Diamanté Vintage Bib Necklace

    , ,
This vintage bib necklace has a 3 ½”-wide centerpiece of tapered, curved links of channel-set diamanté and sprays of single stones. The setting is rhodium-plated white metal. An adjustable bar link chain with a spring-ring clasp completes the piece. This type of adjustable clasp – instead of the North American-style J-hook – was used by many German jewelry makers in the 1950s. The design and construction of this piece remind me of the work of Schreiber & Hiller, but this necklace is unmarked. Nonetheless, I think it was German-made. Emerald & Crystal Triangle Necklace

    , ,
This triangle necklace from the 1920s has molded emerald-glass stones alternating with faceted crystals, all set in white-metal frames. Molded glass from this period was used to simulate the carved gemstones made popular by fine jewelers such as Cartier. This piece is Art Deco costume jewelry at its best – the use of strong contrasting colors and a geometric shape. This stunning necklace from my personal collection closes with a spring-ring clasp. Although a few of the crystal triangles have tiny chips, they aren't visible when this piece is worn.

Faceted, round emerald-glass beads are the focal point of these early-1930s Czech earrings. An emerald-glass stone in a silver-tone setting sits at the earlobe. Gemstone Fruit Salad & Diamanté Dress Clips

    , ,
Ruby, sapphire, and emerald acorn-shaped glass stones are surrounded by diamanté in this classic pair of 1930s dress clips. Costume jewelry makers adopted this practice of molding colored glass in the shapes of leaves or fruits to imitate Indian-carved gemstones used in fine jewelry. Firms such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels popularized these fruit salads or tutti frutti in Art Deco pieces. The trio of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds was a favorite combination. The setting of this pair is rhodium-plated base metal. You can see the utility patent for the dress clip mechanism here, shown below the name of Anthony E. Waller.
