Amethyst & Diamanté Silver Leaf Brooch by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
This silver leaf brooch is an unusual and elegant 1950s creation by Miriam Haskell. It has pale-amethyst-glass nuggets set on a bed of layered, etched silver-tone leaves. Diamantés and beads of pale lavender and clear glass also adorn this luscious piece. I love the way the leaves curl around the large stones. This amazing brooch was in my personal collection, and I am now reluctantly offering it to you.

Amethyst, Diamanté & Rose-Gold Brooch by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
This vintage rose gold brooch is a striking Retro Modern piece made by Pennino Bros. in two layers. The top is a pavé ribbon of rhodium-plated metal that’s edged with faceted, oval amethyst-glass stones topped with tiny diamanté. The center is cinched with rose-gold plated metal. The second layer is a furled rose-gold ribbon that’s attached to the top with a tiny screw. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. This brooch is not flat – the four corners of the bottom layer fold under, as curls of ribbon or fabric would. The back shows the high-quality, complex construction characteristic of this maker.

Amethyst, Diamanté & Vermeil Bouquet Brooch

    , ,
This Corocraft brooch is just stunning! This Adolph Katz-designed piece has four pavé stems topped with faceted, oval amethyst-glass stones that are gathered through the center of a flower with diamanté-rimmed gold-plated sterling silver petals. The gold-plating on the flower is perfect – the difference in tone you see is from the camera’s reflection. What an outstanding example of the Retro Modern style! I have photographed the brooch in the vertical position as well as horizontally, as it appears in the patent drawing (shown in the second photo). This jewel, which closes with a roll-over safety clasp, is rich in contrasting colors and was in my personal collection. Wear it on the lapel of a blazer, and I guarantee you’ll be noticed!

    Aquamarine & Vermeil Flower Pin

    , ,
This aquamarine flower pin in gold-plated sterling silver is bold and beautiful. It features a faceted, round glass stone set on each of the flower’s five petals. This tall (4-inch) piece was made by Hess-Appel under their Jollé trademark without the accent (which was used only in their advertisements). The stem and two leaves are curled a bit, a characteristic of the 1940s Retro Modern style. The finish is in great shape. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. USD$445.00

Aquamarine, Diamanté & Vermeil Flower Brooch by Mazer Bros.

    , ,
This aquamarine brooch by Mazer Bros. is a fine example of the Retro Modern style. Tall and graceful, this substantial, stylized flower features a large, faceted cushion-cut glass stone as its focal point. The gold-plated, sterling silver setting is further embellished with four, faceted oval-cut stones along with pavé-accented gold swirls. This pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Pieces of this size with a gold-plated finish often don’t survive as well as this brooch has. But costume jewelry was well-made in the 1940s by companies of this maker’s stature. Note that any color variations in metal seen in the photos are only camera reflections.

Schreiber & Hiller have made it even more distinctive by using black diamantés channel-set in slender, slightly curved links on the outside with a double-row of smaller, slightly lighter stones inside. The difference in colors is very subtle. At 3 ¼” long, this piece is a fabulous and versatile example of the era. This jewel closes with a trombone clasp.

    , , ,
In this vintage rose brooch, Boucher crafted a lovely three-dimensional flower in black-enameled lattice trimmed with round diamantés. The stem is adorned with baguettes. The rhodium-plated setting closes with a roll-over safety clasp. The matching ear clips, which are just as well-designed, are a bonus. This incredibly-detailed 1950s set deserves its elegant name: Rose of Seville. Wear the brooch with real or faux diamond stud earrings. Or, if you like the style of the decade, wear the pieces together. Either approach will make your outfit memorable. Dazzling jewels for day or evening.

Blue Topaz, Ruby, Diamanté & Vermeil Flower Brooch

    , ,
This flower brooch designed by Adolph Katz is a stunning example of the Retro Modern style and the pieces created for Coro's high-end line in the 1940s. The gold-plated sterling silver center looks like folds of a fabric with pavé-trimming at each end. The same trim is wound around the center. From there emanate two boughs of faceted, oval blue-topaz-glass flowers with round ruby-glass accents. The blue stones have foil backs to intensify their color. The pin closes with a fold-over safety clasp. Gorgeous colors and amazing condition. This delicious jewel was advertised in the February 1, 1946 issue of Vogue.

Its sterling silver bow, a popular motif during the 1940s, is further embellished with emerald-cut glass stones in a paler shade of yellow. This brooch closes with a roll-over safety clasp. What's unusual about this high-quality piece is that it is unsigned and that the sterling is not gold-washed (which was more typical of Retro Modern jewels like this one). This vintage German brooch in gold-plated sterling silver is highly-decorated. Its focal point is a flower with a faceted, round citrine-glass stone at the center. The twisted metal decoration on the sides gives this piece a bit of a Machine Age-feel. • Vintage wreath brooch & earrings set by Alice Caviness
Oval brooch w/layers of stones & leaves
    USD$395.00

Citrine, Golden Topaz & Mother-of-Pearl Brooch & Earrings Set

    , , ,
This vintage wreath brooch and earrings set by Alice Caviness features amazing layers of components wired onto a decorative brass frame. Included are citrine- glass stones in multiple shapes and sizes, faceted golden-topaz beads, mother-of-pearl disks, aurora borealis diamanté, and textured brass leaves. The jeweled frame of the brooch is mounted on another that holds the pin and roll-over safety clasp; each earring has a round filigree back with the ear clip. The complexity of the design and construction seen here are often present in this maker’s work, which I believe is underrated. This set is definitely not for the faint-hearted! The brooch with a roll-over safety clasp reflects the hue of the garment it's pinned to. Although women in the 1950s typically wore matching sets of jewelry, you don't have to do that. • Vintage Ciro brooch or pair of clips
    Vintage Ciro double clip brooch
    USD$345.00

Diamanté & Sterling Ciro Brooch or Pair of Clips

    , , ,
This fine vintage Ciro brooch is a dainty and exceptionally well-made piece, probably from the late-1930s. The design of furled sterling silver ribbons set with diamantés reflects the romanticism of the period. Wear this lovely piece as a brooch on your collar, hat, or cloth bag. The separate dress clips bring elegant sparkle to a round- or v-neckline. The condition of the stones is exceptional. Although this jewel bears Ciro's mark, the piece was made by an unknown French or German company. The trombone clasp is a clue to the country of origin. Like the jewelry of many high-end retailers, Ciro’s was designed, produced and stamped with their logo by various manufacturers whose work was commissioned. This double clip brooch is the only one I’ve seen with a brooch mechanism that frames the entire piece. Vintage Ciro jewels are hard to date and were not inexpensive when they were made.

Diamanté Floral Brooch by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
Whether you’re looking for a wedding dress brooch or something unique and elegant for every day, this sparkly jewel is for you. It is identical to the “central motif” of a necklace shown in the Gordon & Pamfiloff book on this maker. There the centerpiece is described as “silver metal leaves edged with rose montées and two large clear rhinestones surrounded by smaller rhinestones”. While the necklace is much more elaborate, this Frank Hess-designed 1950s piece is perfect for today, any time of day! I bought this brooch for myself, but I am now reluctantly offering it to a new home.

Diamanté Lightning Bolt 1930s Brooch by Schreiber & Hiller

This 1930s brooch by the German maker Schreiber & Hiller reminds me of a bolt of lightning, a popular theme in Machine Age jewelry of that decade. This piece is formed by seven flat-top links that are bent to form a sort of zig-zag shape. Long (3 ¼”) and lean, this unusual brooch closes with a trombone clasp.
