Vintage Earrings

Vintage earrings are one of my favorite types of jewelry, and here you’ll find a vast selection from the 1920s-1950s. From Art Deco dangling styles to bead- and stone-cluster ear clips, this collection features a wide range of colors, materials, and silhouettes. Pieces like chandeliers by Hattie Carnegie or pearl clusters by Louis Rousselet will draw every eye up to your face, adding that little extra sparkle to any look. It’s no wonder earrings are many women’s go-to accessory. Whether adding color or shine to a simple everyday look or bringing that stunning cocktail dress to the next level, the perfect pair of vintage earrings will help to make you and your outfit memorable.

Amethyst & Diamanté 1930s Austrian Earrings

    , ,
These vintage Austrian earrings feature three rows of vertically-set stones. In the middle are two deep-amethyst baguettes with a round diamanté on top and a faceted, teardrop-shaped diamanté at the bottom. On either side of the middle, the pattern is repeated but with a single baguette. The setting is rhodium-plated metal shaped to hold the stones together, making each pendant one piece. A single, faceted, round diamanté sits at the earlobe. These 1930s Art Deco earrings are all-original screw-backs and can be modified for pierced ears. The color combination is rich, regal, and easy-to-wear.

Amethyst 1940s Earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli

    , ,
These classic and classy emerald-cut, amethyst-glass late-1940s ear clips by Elsa Schiaparelli are really hard to photograph. The stones are open back (without any green, as the photos may suggest) in a silver-tone setting. The actual color is a deep amethyst. I have a faux pearl bracelet with a similar clasp, also by Schiaparelli, which I will include with this purchase. (The clasp of the bracelet is lovely, but the quality of the pearls is disappointing and the strands need re-stringing – hence, the no-cost offer.)

Aquamarine & Vermeil Sterling Flower Petal Earrings by Pennino Bros.

    , ,
These lively flower petal earrings with aquamarine-glass-stone centers were made by Pennino Bros. in the 1940s. The curled, flirty flower petals in gold-washed sterling silver are the same shape and finish this maker used in a series of 1947 brooches, called Sunburst. The stone settings are the same as their Bulrush brooch and earrings set from the same year. According to Brunialti, the patent pending mark on the earrings refers to the clip mechanism. These designs were not patented. These details are just for background – these ear clips are divine! And by facing each other, they frame your face to perfection.

    Baroque Pearl French 1950s Earrings

    , ,
These baroque pearl earrings have a large, cream-colored glass pearl center encircled by a ring of small, matching round pearls. Though these 1950s earrings are unsigned, the construction (especially the ear-clip mechanism) and materials are consistent with those used by Louis Rousselet. (His pieces were usually only signed with paper hang tags.) These earrings would make a lovely accessory for daytime, evening, or bridal/wedding/prom wear.

Black & White Bakelite Art Deco Dangle Earrings

    , ,
These Art Deco dangle earrings are an example of the whimsical type of jewelry that could be produced when the early plastics, such as Bakelite and Galalith, became available. Each earring features a trio of black-and-white cubes dangling from chrome bars and links. Two cubes are the same length, while the third is longer. These all-original earrings have ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears. The findings are unmarked, so I don’t know the metal content. Scroll down to see an equally fun matching bracelet.

The original screw-backs were converted to sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. These unusual Art Deco earrings are a lovely shade of blue. Brown & Golden Topaz Pendant Earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli

    , ,
These brown and gold topaz earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli feature multiple stones in a gold-tone setting. At the top, a large, faceted, round golden-topaz-glass stone is positioned to adorn your earlobe. This stone is linked to a smaller, faceted, round brown-topaz-glass stone, which is connected to the setting of the pendant. This focal point – the pendant – is a large, faceted, open-back, brown-topaz-glass stone in an ornate setting. Its top is crowned with diamanté; the bottom rests on a scroll accented with another brown topaz. Please note that the dark striations in the large stones shown by my camera are not visible when the earrings are worn. Though not signed with the maker’s name, these ear clips are marked with the utility patent for one type of finding Schiaparelli used. The design of these pendants is undoubtedly hers – scroll down to see the matching signed bracelet. Both are perfect for those who look best in warm colors.

Camphor Glass Earrings with Diamanté & Onyx

    ,
These camphor glass earrings were made in the Art Deco style and were very difficult to photograph in the hanging position. The camphor glass is more opaque than the first picture suggests; the second is a more accurate depiction. The pendants are embellished with diamanté triangles and rectangular onyx-glass stones. The ear wires with lever-backs for pierced ears are original to the earrings and unmarked. I have seen similar earrings in Ginger Moro’s book (European Designer Jewelry, p. 49) described as being made from vintage components. Gemstone & Sterling Acrostic 1940s Earrings by DeRosa

Sterling silver set with gemstone-colored glass stones in a crescent shape make these 1940s ear clips by DeRosa very versatile. The colored stones are graduated in size and enhanced with an inner ring of diamanté. Moreover, the faux diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire and topaz form the word dearest, making these earrings acrostic (i.e., the initials of the stones form a word or name). This type of sentimental jewelry was very popular in the 19th century Victorian era, a style that inspired some 1940s jewelry designers. DeRosa pieces are always exceptionally well-made and hard to find.

I am not certain, however, because of the style of the ear clip.

Pearl & Blown Glass Bead 1950s Pendant Earrings by Louis Rousselet

    , ,
These blown glass ear clips have clusters of beads in greens, purples, and reds, along with pearls. This pair was made by Louis Rousselet, according to Ginger Moro (the author of European Designer Jewelry and a Rousselet expert). Though marked "Charlin" on the ear clips, these pendants are "a re-issue of an earlier design from the '50s using vintage glass beads and pearls", stated Moro in correspondence, when I bought these earrings from her. The colors and design make this pair very versatile and easy to wear for day or evening.

Pearl & Blown Glass Flower French 1950s Earrings

    , ,
Clusters of tiny faux pearls with blown-glass flowers and leaves form these 1950s ear clips. The design and style of the beads remind me of the work of the French maker Louis Rousselet, although the earring backs are not the same as those he typically used. However, the findings I'm familiar with would have been too small for this creation. Please note that although these earrings are not mirror images, the lack of symmetry – which is not unusual in hand-strung pieces – does not detract from their lovely appearance. What a great choice for a bride!

Each pendant is held in place by a cluster of glass pearls mounted on a round, white-metal filigree back. This part is designed to adorn the earlobe. These charming earrings, though unsigned, have the traditional French filigree back and ear clip used by Louis Rousselet. (His pieces were typically signed with only a paper hang tag.) Pearl, Gemstone Bead & Rondelle 1950s Earrings by Louis Rousselet

    , ,
These 1950s French ear clips by Louis Rousselet feature faux pearls in various sizes, with accents of ruby, sapphire, emerald and amethyst blown glass leaves and rondelles. Though unsigned, these earrings match a signed necklace and earrings set that I have moved from my personal collection to offer for sale. The type of ear clip used is another clue to the creator, who usually signed his pieces with only paper hang tags. Louis Rousselet was the premier faux pearl and bead maker in the first half of the 20th century. These earrings are a beautiful example of his work. Although the coating on some pearls appears to have bubbles, I think they are intended. Scroll down to see the magnificent necklace and earrings set in the same design.
