Vintage Earrings

Vintage earrings are one of my favorite types of jewelry, and here you’ll find a vast selection from the 1920s-1950s. From Art Deco dangling styles to bead- and stone-cluster ear clips, this collection features a wide range of colors, materials, and silhouettes. Pieces like chandeliers by Hattie Carnegie or pearl clusters by Louis Rousselet will draw every eye up to your face, adding that little extra sparkle to any look. It’s no wonder earrings are many women’s go-to accessory. Whether adding color or shine to a simple everyday look or bringing that stunning cocktail dress to the next level, the perfect pair of vintage earrings will help to make you and your outfit memorable.

Golden & Brown Topaz & Gold Clover 1950s Earrings by Elsa Schiaparelli

    , ,
Three faceted, shield-cut topaz-glass stones – two golden and one brown – with citrine accents form these ear clips by Elsa Schiaparelli. The exotic three-sided shape of the large stones enhances the three-leaf clover design in gold-tone metal. These details and the elaborate construction of the earring backs exemplify this maker's ingenuity and quality. This color combination – which is perfect for those who look best in warm colors – can be found in other Schiaparelli pieces. You can see the utility patent for the earring clasp here, shown below the names Frederick A. Ballou, Jr. & Rogers T. Stafford.

Golden Topaz & Silver 1920s Pendant Earrings

    , ,
These 1920s drop earrings are fun and unusual but hard to describe. The pendant is a ball composed of a faceted, golden-topaz-glass disk sandwiched between two shiny, silver-tone domes. A golden-topaz glass stone sits at the ear lobe, and a small bead is at the center of the paper-clip chain. These all-original, long earrings have screw-backs, which can be modified for pierced ears. Wear them with off-duty and business-casual attire. Scroll down to see a bracelet and necklace to wear with these jewels.

Golden Topaz & Vermeil Sterling Flower Earrings

    , ,
These graceful earrings are so beautiful and well-made that I'm surprised they are unsigned. They feature curled sterling silver leaves surrounding a faceted, oval golden-topaz glass center. The metal has a hint of a warm gold wash, which was popular in the 1940s. These elegant screw-back earrings are timeless and great for both day and evening wear.

Golden Topaz, Green Tourmaline & Diamanté Christian Dior Earrings

    , ,
These Christian Dior earrings feature textured, gold-plated ropes intertwined with faceted golden-topaz and green- tourmaline glass stones and AB diamanté. (Swarovski, in collaboration with Dior, invented aurora borealis – a coating that adds iridescence to stones.) The color combination and elaborate hook-and-eye construction of these 1950s ear clips are worthy of the maker’s name. Elegant, classic, and perfect for a woman who looks best in warm colors. These earrings looked amazing when they walked the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019.

These Art Deco chandelier earrings feature a circle of pale jade glass beads suspended from a triangle of silver-tone chain dotted with additional beads. A single bead pendant hangs within each circle, and a matching larger disk is set where it will adorn the earlobe. Lavishly-long (3-inch), this pair is possibly Czech in origin. Jade Bead Dangling Earrings by Louis Rousselet

    , ,
These jade bead earrings feature clusters of vibrant dark-apple-green-glass barrels cascading from French ear clips. Some of the beads have striations. Though unsigned, these delightful 1950s creations feature the same style of ear clip typically used by Louis Rousselet. What’s more significant is the way the earrings are constructed: on the backs we see the flower-shaped links to which the beads are wired, a unique trait of this maker’s work. (Note that he typically signed his pieces with only a paper hang tag.) These playful and unusual earrings are perfect for any occasion.

    Jade Drop Earrings

    , ,
These jade drop earrings are made from molded glass that simulates carved stone. Lusciously-detailed with a silver-tone metal cap, each pendant has small jade-glass beads that lead to the stone at the earlobe. The setting is silver-tone metal. These all-original earrings have screw-backs, which can be modified for pierced ears. Jade was a very popular element in Art Deco jewelry. A soft color for today's woman who looks best in warm hues.

    Lapis & Diamanté Dangling Earrings

    ,
These Art Deco-style earrings are a bit of a mystery. Based on what I’ve seen in Ginger Moro’s book (European Designer Jewelry, p. 49), I’m guessing that this pair was made in Europe in the 1980s from vintage materials. Each rounded-triangular-shaped lapis-glass drop is embellished with diamante and a rectangular onyx-glass stone. The ear wires with lever-backs are original to the earrings and unmarked. Regardless of their date of manufacture, these earrings from my personal collection are distinctive and beautiful. Scroll down to see the same design in camphor glass.

Lapis Bead Czech 1930s Drop Earrings

    , ,
A pair of lapis glass beads, each capped with flower-petal-shaped metal, form these Art Deco drop earrings from the former Czechoslovakia. The lower bead is 1/2-inch in diameter. The size and color make these earrings a bit bolder in effect than pieces from the 1920s. The original screw-backs were replaced with sterling silver posts for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. Lapis Panel 1930s Pendant Earrings

    , ,
These lapis blue earrings are formed from molded-glass panels that look like carved gemstones. The flower motif in the blue-glass pendants is present in the silver-tone metal components that connect the pendant to the earring top. These all-original, unusual earrings have screw-backs, but they can be modified for pierced ears. Because these Art Deco earrings are 2″ long and bold (the glass panels are 3/4-inch squares), I would wear these drops with only an Art Deco bracelet – scroll down to see a selection. This versatile color is perfect for those who look best in cool hues.

Milk Glass Bead, Diamanté & Gold Earrings by Miriam Haskell

    , ,
These milk glass earrings with beads and disks, rondelles, and gold-tone findings have a real Machine Age-look and associated movement. However, the use of French ear clips dates them to the late-1940s, and the white beads may take them into the 1950s, when white jewelry was extremely popular. I still consider this pair to be Art Deco in style, and I’ve seen the same motif used by this designer (Frank Hess) on earlier Miriam Haskell pieces. Whenever they were made, these ear clips are lots of fun! I saw them in an entirely new, bright, and glamorous light when they were chosen to walk the runway at Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019. See them on the model who looked stunning in a bridal jumpsuit with skirt. You don't have to be a bride to add glamour to an ensemble with these fabulous earrings!

These Alice Caviness earrings have clusters of black- and clear-glass bi-colored beads. Some have caps of silver-tone filigree, while other caps are solid metal. These ear clips were designed in the starburst or atomic motif that was popular in the 1950s, yet they are so versatile and wearable now! Each of these classic 1950s ear clips by Elsa Schiaparelli features two faceted, oval onyx-glass stones nestled in a trio of curled, textured, silver-tone leaves. Designed with one of her favorite motifs (leaves), this pair is so well-made that even the backs are textured. Onyx-glass hoops attached to emerald-green-enamel and diamanté-embellished panels of silver-tone metal form these lovely and versatile earrings. Additional diamanté adorn the earlobe. The ear wires for pierced ears are original, but the lever backs are unmarked. These earrings are probably European in origin. Though Art Deco in style, something about this pair makes me think they may be from a later Revival era. Nevertheless, they are beautiful! Pastel Art Glass French 1950s Dangling Earrings

    , ,
These dangling art glass earrings feature pale pink, green and blue beads that dangle on chains suspended from a pink glass button. The pastel-colored beads in different shapes and sizes have white striations. These 1950s ear clips are lovely and versatile, and have lots of movement. Though unsigned, this pair resembles pieces made by Louis Rousselet, especially with the glass button at the earlobe and the high-quality of the beads. I am not certain, however, because of the style of the ear clip.

Pearl & Blown Glass Bead 1950s Pendant Earrings by Louis Rousselet

    , ,
These blown glass ear clips have clusters of beads in greens, purples, and reds, along with pearls. This pair was made by Louis Rousselet, according to Ginger Moro (the author of European Designer Jewelry and a Rousselet expert). Though marked "Charlin" on the ear clips, these pendants are "a re-issue of an earlier design from the '50s using vintage glass beads and pearls", stated Moro in correspondence, when I bought these earrings from her. The colors and design make this pair very versatile and easy to wear for day or evening.
