Baroque Pearl & Amethyst Bead 1970s Long Necklace by Miriam Haskell

    ,
This Miriam Haskell pearl necklace is a beautiful example of this maker’s work. The long strand of faux cream baroque pearls and pearl bead spacers is interspersed with faceted amethyst glass beads. The pearls are textured and somewhat varying in size. Wear this piece as a single long strand or doubled, depending on your neckline and the look you want to create. Although I usually prefer earlier vintage jewels, this beautiful necklace was part of my personal collection because it is so elegant, timeless and versatile. The wear to the nacre of some pearls does not detract in any way from the lovely appearance of this piece.

  • Vintage black Bakelite necklace with diamanté links.
German Machine Age necklace by Schreiber & Hiller
    USD$445.00

Black Bakelite & Diamanté Necklace by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
A beautiful example of Machine Age design that you will love. This vintage black Bakelite necklace features six curved links set with diamantés that alternate with Bakelite (or Galalith) links with pointed tops. Because the jeweled links are curved, the centerpiece follows the curve of your neck instead of laying out in a straight line. A scroll chain with a spring-ring clasp completes this elegant and easy-to-wear necklace that I always enjoyed. You can see it on my favorite model in this blog post. Blue Bead 2-Strand Choker by Hattie Carnegie

    , ,
This blue bead choker necklace is made from the unusual, high-quality beads typically used by Hattie Carnegie. This fringe statement necklace has cobalt-blue glass tubes and chrome balls dangling from chrome links. The metal and fringe elements have a Machine Age-look and give this piece lots of movement! Some of the blue glass tubes have minor chips, but they are not noticeable when this beauty is worn. Carnelian, Jade & Pearl Bead Necklace

    , ,
This 1930s French necklace has large jade-glass beads and smaller carnelian-glass beads with chrome caps. A donut-shaped faux pearl flanks each bead. Large flat chrome links complete the length of this well-made piece, which closes with a decorative barrel clasp. An additional four links (which total one inch) are included, in case you need them. This Jakob Bengel necklace in the well-known Mauerwerk (brickwork) pattern is the epitome of German Machine Age design. This chromium-plated brass piece, which closes with a spring-ring clasp, feels very slinky. Chrysoprase, Onyx, & Ruby Disk Choker with Rondelles

    , ,
This statement choker necklace features faceted, opaque chrysoprase-, onyx- and ruby-glass disks and rondelles. The components are strung on metal chain. The necklace closes with a barrel clasp formed by two of the disks. Based on the construction of this piece, I think it is European in origin. As often happens with necklaces made like this one, the chain has stretched. I don’t recommend having a jeweler cut the excess – just keep it at the back. This multi-colored, versatile necklace can be worn with many Art Deco jewels, depending on the color you wish to emphasize — scroll down to see a selection. Citrine & Crystal 1920s Tiered Necklace

    , ,
The design and construction of this tiered necklace, a variation on the 1920s chicklet-style, is first class. Golden yellow, square-cut glass stones alternate with oblong crystals to form the necklace and tiered centerpiece. Round dangling citrine-glass stones add the movement that was so essential in the Art Deco era. All of the stones are faceted and mounted in decorated, silver-tone metal. The construction makes me think this piece was made in Europe. This divine jewel, which I initially purchased for myself, closes with a spring-ring clasp. This plaque necklace made in Germany in the 1930s has tapered, curved links of diamanté on either side of a black Bakelite disk. It is topped with a large, claw-set diamanté surrounded by smaller stones. When laid out on a table, the necklace forms a wide v-shape. • Snake chain necklace with diamante
Front of German snake chain necklace
    USD$325.00

    Diamanté German Snake Chain Necklace

    , ,
This snake chain necklace from Germany has a curved centerpiece with a Machine Age-look. The white-metal links with channel-set stones are separated by trios of flat-metal links. All are connected with flat disks at the top and bottom (probably to cover a connecting chain). At each end is a triangle-shaped element formed by two long and one short link with channel-set stones. This piece closes with a spring-ring clasp. Although I had always associated snake chains with the 1940s, I just learned that they were first introduced in 1850. This necklace has a maker’s mark, but I have been unable to identify the company. Although this necklace was made for a slim neck (the length is 14 1/2"), you could add a chain extender if needed. The absence of an adjustable closure makes me think this piece was made before the 1950s. Diamanté Vintage Bib Necklace

    , ,
This vintage bib necklace has a 3 ½”-wide centerpiece of tapered, curved links of channel-set diamanté and sprays of single stones. The setting is rhodium-plated white metal. An adjustable bar link chain with a spring-ring clasp completes the piece. This type of adjustable clasp – instead of the North American-style J-hook – was used by many German jewelry makers in the 1950s. The design and construction of this piece remind me of the work of Schreiber & Hiller, but this necklace is unmarked. Nonetheless, I think it was German-made. USD$295.00

Pearl, Diamanté & Gold Flower Necklace/Brooch & Earrings Set

    , , , , ,
This vintage gold flower necklace and earrings set from 1950 is a '3-for-1' jewel! It has a trio of heart-shaped blossoms that form the centerpiece, which can be detached and worn as a brooch. The ear clips are single blossoms. The gold-plated fretwork has swirled pavé edges that embrace champagne-colored faux pearls. Attach the brooch to the snake chain by inserting the pin stem through the necklace loops. Pretty clever, eh! While the pendant appears slightly off-center on the chain, its position was fixed at manufacture. Please note that this necklace (which measures 14 3/8″) was made for a slim neck, but you could easily add a chain extender. Wear the pieces together or separately with complimentary contemporary jewels.

  • Vintage pearl necklace signed by Louis Rousselet
Louis Rousselet signed faux pearl & gemstone necklace
    USD$1,995.00

Pearl, Gemstone Bead & Rondelle Necklace & Earrings by Louis Rousselet

    , , ,
This exceptional vintage pearl necklace by the incomparable Louis Rousselet features four strands of glass pearls in varied shapes and sizes. They are accented with hand-wound-glass beads in gemstone colors paired with rondelles. (In case you aren't familiar with their work, you need to know that they were regarded as the premier maker of glass beads and faux pearls as well as costume jewelry for haute couture from the 1920s-1980s.) The necklace closes with a box clasp adorned with piles of pearls and colored beads, and signed with the maker's initials in script. The matching ear clips are a bonus. Finding a Rousselet-signed piece is incredibly rare (most had only signed paper hang tags), which makes this set all the more extraordinary! Ruby 1920s Pendant Necklace with Chicklets

    , ,
This delicate 1920s pendant necklace is another variation of the chicklet-style so popular in the Art Deco era. This piece has a beautifully-faceted, rectangular ruby-glass stone suspended from a smaller, oblong-shaped stone along with three chicklets on each side of the chain closest to the center drop. The metal is silver-tone and unmarked. This necklace closes with a spring-ring clasp. I don’t usually like pendants, but this one is special! It’s perfect for a v-neckline.

Ruby Glass Bead Necklace with Rondelles

    , ,
This vintage red glass bead necklace with rondelles is probably from France. The uniformly-sized beads were molded in the shape of melons, a popular style in the 1920s-1930s. Wear this piece as a single long strand of 33 inches, or double it with a necklace shortener or ribbon tied at the back. Either way, you’ll love the deep-red color and the substantial quality of these beads. This necklace from my personal collection has been professionally restrung. Just add simple diamond studs to complete your look.

    Blue chicklet necklace

Sapphire Chicklet & Enamel 1920s Necklace

    , ,
This faux sapphire necklace has faceted, square-cut, blue-glass chicklets alternating with glass stones molded in a step pattern. The result is an Art Deco classic. The two blue-enamel links on each end make me think this piece is European in origin. This necklace closes with a spring-ring clasp. The original silver-tone finish is worn in places on the piece, so much of the brass is showing. Because the focus is the gorgeous blue stones, this slight blemish doesn't detract in any way from the beauty of this jewel. This elegant necklace is versatile and timeless, and from my personal collection.

    Silver Ring Bib Necklace

    , ,
This Art Deco bib necklace is an unusual 1930s piece. It is formed by embossed silver-tone rings connected with embossed links that suggest the appearance of inset stones. The bib portion is an additional two strands, which form a wide V-shape in the front. This piece closes with an older style spring-ring clasp. A versatile necklace for a woman who looks best in cool colors.

  • Sterling silver choker, 1940s, by Walter Lampl
Walter Lampl sterling silver flexible choker
    USD$375.00

Sterling Silver Choker by Walter Lampl

    , ,
This sterling silver choker by Walter Lampl was the height of style in the mid- to late-1940s. The simplicity of this piece makes it wearable with almost anything. This well-constructed necklace closes with a concealed clasp. This choker was made for a slim neck, even though the construction allows for a bit of stretch. Please note the length (14 1/2"), and measure your neck before making this purchase. This jewel was advertised in the May 1947 issue of The Jewelers' Circular - Keystone (a trade publication). I wrote a blog post about two stars who wore this style of necklace in 1940s films, as part of my Jewelry in the Movies series. Cate Blanchett wore a gold version in the 2015 film Carol. You can see this Lampl sterling jewel on my favorite model in this blog post.
