Ruby, Diamanté & Gold Circle 1950s Brooch & Earrings Set by Marcel Boucher

    , ,
Marcel Boucher designed a number of circle pins and earrings in the 1950s, and this set is a lovely example of this work. The gold-plated open-circle brooch is embellished with an arrow of pavé topped with ruby glass baguettes. The closed-circle earrings are embellished with the same stones in a leaf-like setting. Perhaps these pieces were not originally a set. (The brooch is unmarked; the earrings have no inventory number.) Even so, they look great together!

Ruby, Diamanté & Rose Vermeil Sterling 1940s ‘Sparkling Peonies’ Duette & Earrings Set by Coro

    , ,
This Coro Duette brooch has two rose-gold-plated sterling silver flowers edged in diamanté with ruby-glass-stone centers. It can be worn as a brooch or as separate fur clips, and has matching earrings. Made for the company's high-end line, this stunning set showcases one of Adolph Katz’s brilliant Retro Modern designs, from both an aesthetic and engineering point of view. For Duettes that were asymmetrical like this one, the brooch frame had to be customized to work with the particular pair of clips. Truly gorgeous pieces in remarkable condition! You can see the utility patent for the brooch mechanism here, shown below Coro's name. This design was advertised by the company as Sparkling Peonies.

Ruby, Diamanté & Sterling 1920s Bar Brooch

    , ,
This Art Deco bar brooch has large, faceted, square-cut ruby-glass stones divided by pairs of round diamanté. This well-made, sterling silver piece is finished with engraved edges and an older-style clasp. The 935 mark, which refers to a higher silver content than the American sterling standard of 925 parts per 1000, makes me think this lovely piece is European in origin. Bar brooches never go out of style, and this one is exceptional! The deep-red stones are perfect for a woman who looks best in cool colors. Just add your own real or faux diamond stud earrings to complete the look.

Ruby, Diamanté & Sterling Flower Basket Trifari Brooch

    , ,
This Trifari brooch from the 1940s is a flower basket design in the Victorian Revival style. It has faceted, oval ruby-glass flowers surrounded by diamanté leaves in a diamanté trimmed basket. The setting is rhodium-plated sterling silver; the pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Two other brooches by this maker in this design are available: one has aquamarine flowers; the other, amethysts – scroll down to see them. All three are from my personal collection. Ruby, Diamanté & Vermeil Sterling 1940s Trifari Bracelet

    , ,
This Trifari bracelet was made during WWII, when costume jewelry makers had to use sterling silver because base metals were limited to war-related manufacturing. This piece features pairs of facing scroll-shaped links adorned with diamanté. Each pair is separated by a pair of faceted, oval, prong-set ruby-glass stones. Simple flat gold links hold the elements together and end with a fold-over clasp. The red stones really complement the gold-washed setting. This lovely bracelet can be worn anytime, anywhere.

Ruby, Emerald & Diamanté Layered Brooch

    , ,
This glass beaded brooch has foil-backed, pear-shaped diamanté set in silver-tone frames that form the base. On top are layers of ruby- and emerald-blown-glass beads and additional pear-shaped stones. The components are wired onto a silver-tone filigree back with a trombone clasp. Probably made in France in the late-1950s to early-1960s, this substantial piece is nearly one-inch high! Two stones have darkened a bit, but they are much brighter than the photos indicate. This jewel still has plenty of sparkle!

Ruby, Onyx, Pearl, Diamanté & Gold Dangling 1950s Bracelet by Hobé

    , ,
Prong-set diamanté surrounding gold-tone links decorated with dangling pearls, and ruby and onyx bi-color glass beads form this lively 1950s bracelet by Hobé.  It closes with a concealed clasp. This piece is a fine example of 1950s glam from the second generation of the company's designers.  Note that this bracelet was made for a slim wrist. Be sure to measure yours and note the bracelet's dimensions ( 6 3/4-inch length) before purchase.

Sapphire & Crystal 1920s Pendant Earrings

    , ,
These unusual Art Deco pendant earrings feature a large, faceted, bi-color crystal bead. Its top is clear, and the bottom is a deep-sapphire-blue. A small crystal bead is at the center of the silver-tone links, and a silver-tone filigree knot is at the earlobe. These all-original, long (2 1/2") earrings are dainty, yet full of life. The screw-backs can be modified for pierced ears. The screws are marked sterling, but I don't know if the rest of the findings are. Scroll down to see a selection of necklaces and bracelets to wear with these stylish jewels.

Sapphire & Diamanté ‘Jeweleaf’ Brooch & Earrings Set by Trifari

    , ,
This Trifari leaf brooch and ear clips set was named Jeweleaf. Designed by Alfred Philippe in 1951, it features diamanté-paved maple leaves outlined with sapphire-glass baguettes. The setting is rhodium-plated base metal. The pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. An all-diamanté version, described as “platinum-toned … paved with stones” and “one of two charming variations on a Spring theme”, was advertised in the February 1, 1952 issue of Vogue. The brooch was $17.50, and the earrings were $15.00, for a total of $32.50. (In 1950, the average U.S. family’s income was $81.50 per week.) Note that the photo of the brooch alone shows it in the position indicated in the design patent (last photo), but you can wear the jewel in any position you wish. Sapphire & Diamanté 1940s Bow Pennino Brooch

    , ,
The design and construction of this Pennino brooch from the late-1940s is so fine that I bought it for myself. Now I’m reluctantly offering it to a new home. The top layer features a pavé ribbon of rhodium-plated metal that’s edged with faceted, oval sapphire-glass stones topped with tiny diamanté, and cinched in the center with two tones of metal. The bottom layer is a rhodium-plated larger bow. It’s edged with thin rays ending with collet-set, tiny sapphire stones. The two layers are connected with a tiny screw, and the pin closes with a roll-over safety clasp. Pennino pieces are always exceptional, and this one is superb. Its quality rivals that of fine jewelry, but this one is available for a fraction of the cost! Scroll down to see a variation of this design in rose-gold with amethysts.

Sapphire & Diamanté Bracelet by Schreiber & Hiller

    , ,
This sapphire and diamanté bracelet was made in Germany in the 1930s. Of all of the tank-track bracelets in the group by this maker, this piece is the only one with two colors. The long, narrow links with engraved edges are trapezoid in shape when viewed from the side. This Art Deco bracelet closes with a concealed clasp and safety catch. Although some stones have aged, they don't appear cloudy in the way my camera depicts them. This piece still shines! Scroll down to see a matching brooch.

Sapphire & Sterling Bow 1940s Brooch & Earrings Set by Hobé

    , ,
This 1940s sapphire and sterling silver set by Hobé is a bit smaller and more restrained than others in the collection, but it is just as beautiful. A deep-sapphire-blue glass stone is the center of the flower that sits atop the six-loop bow that forms the brooch. The ribbons are adorned with applied leaves and buds. The pin has a roll-over safety clasp. The screw-back earrings are bow-shaped, with sapphire centers.
