Marks

"STERLING PAYCO"

This crystal bangle bracelet by H. Payton is a style that was all the rage in the 1920s. The company is best known by their PAYCO mark. Bracelets like this one were available in many colors of glass to imitate gemstones. With open-back faceted, square-cut stones to let light pass through, this piece goes with everything. It also looks great with other bangles and/or line bracelets of the era. Women typically wore multiple bracelets back then, and I confess that I’ve adopted that practice as part of my own personal style. This bracelet was made for a slim wrist, so please note the inside circumference (6 3/4″) and check your wrist size before purchasing this piece. A few of the stones have tiny chips, and there’s a space between the stone next to the hinge and the metal (shown in the last photo). Another lovely 1920s Art Deco classic is this necklace with faceted clear crystal chicklets set in decorative silver-tone mounts. The three-part drop in the center is formed from links of crystal chicklets, which add to the sparkle and uniqueness of this piece. This necklace is probably silver plate. It closes with a spring-ring clasp. Scroll down to see several coordinating earrings, which also have crystal chicklets, and a bracelet.

    Crystal Bead Earrings with Onyx

    , ,

These vintage crystal bead earrings are formed from a faceted lantern-shaped bead that dangles from a row of crystal beads separated by onyx disks. At the top is a filigree plaque. The original screw-backs were replaced by sterling silver ear wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. I like long earrings, so I had the lever-backs added above the filigree. If these earrings are a bit too long for you, a jeweler could remove the lever-backs and add a sterling post to the back of the filigree. These Art Deco earrings are from my personal collection. This Art Deco bangle has faceted square-cut ruby glass stones alternating with square-cut crystals, set in sterling silver. This bracelet by H. Payton (better-known as PAYCO) has a concealed clasp and etched edges. This design and construction are typical of this type of piece so popular in the 1920s. Clear crystal beads separated by onyx glass beads and clear crystal disks form this classic 1920s-1930s Art Deco necklace. The clear beads are shaped like lanterns and are beautifully faceted to reflect light. This black-and-white look is always in style. The beads have recently been professionally re-strung on wire. This necklace closes with a silver-tone filigree tongue-in-groove clasp. Scroll down to see a selection of Art Deco earrings and bracelets to wear with this necklace.

Crystal & Chrome Chicklet-Style 1930s Necklace by Kollmar & Jourdan

This German Art Deco necklace features three faceted, square-cut crystal chicklets flanked on either side by decorative chrome elements. A scroll chain – a style I’ve seen on many German pieces from this era – completes the necklace and closes with a spring-ring clasp. This piece is the only one I have ever seen by Kollmar & Jourdan, a prominent and long-standing Pforzheim jewelry maker. This lovely necklace goes with every color! Scroll down to see some earrings and a bracelet that do, too.

Although unmarked, the design and quality of this 1920s-1930s Art Deco chrysoprase (glass?) and crystal chicklet-style necklace make me think it was made in Germany. The faceting of the crystals is superb, and the mountings of the stones are highly-decorated. The silver-tone metal may be sterling, although the stone frames are unmarked. This gorgeous piece from my personal collection closes with an older-style spring-ring clasp. Scroll down to see Art Deco earrings and bracelets to wear with this necklace.

Crystal & Sterling Art Deco-Style Necklace

This sterling silver crystal necklace is a 1950s revival of the Art Deco chicklet. These faceted crystal chicklets are set at an angle, adding to the sparkle and uniqueness of this piece. This necklace closes with a concealed clasp; its style tells me this piece was produced in Japan in the early 1950s. After the war, Japan produced a lot of high-quality costume jewelry for export. Chicklet-style earrings and a lovely bangle that coordinate beautifully with this necklace are available – scroll down to take a look. This beautiful necklace added sparkle on the runway during Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2019.

This variation of a 1920s-1930s Art deco chicklet necklace is fashioned from deep citrine glass stones and crystals in the shape of parallelograms. The stones are set in unmarked silver-tone frames. The combination of colors and the shape of the stones make this piece unique and easy to wear. Scroll down to see Art Deco pieces that coordinate well with this shade of citrine and with crystal.

Onyx & Crystal 1920s Bar Brooch

Rectangular, faceted onyx-glass and crystal stones with faceted onyx-glass triangles on the ends form this cut-out Art Deco bar brooch. The pattern creates a checkered effect. The stones are all open-back, and the workmanship is superb. This piece closes with a trombone clasp, which makes me think the brooch is European in origin. I think the setting is sterling silver, but the mark is unreadable. Scroll down to see Art Deco earrings and bracelets that coordinate beautifully with this brooch. Black-and-white never goes out of style!

    Crystal Dangle Earrings with Chicklets

    , ,

These crystal dangle earrings from the 1920s are absolutely gorgeous! Long and elegant, they feature square-cut and round stones in metal mounts, in what is known today as “chicklets”. Two sets of round stones dangle from the pair of square ones. As was common in the early part of the last century, the left and right earrings are complementary, to frame your face properly. These Art Deco earrings were part of my personal collection. The original screw-backs were replaced with sterling silver wires with lever backs for pierced ears by my expert jeweler. What a great pair for a wedding, special occasion, or any time you want to look classy! Scroll down to see the perfect bracelets to wear with these earrings.

    Crystal Chicklet Dangling 1920s Earrings

    , ,

Three faceted square-cut crystal chicklets dangle in these charming 1920s Art Deco earrings. The all-original screw-backs (which can be modified for pierced ears) each have a diamond-shaped crystal chicklet at the earlobe. The mountings and findings may be sterling silver, but only the screw-backs are marked. Because the dangling chicklets are separated by rings, these earrings have lots of movement and light reflection. These earrings look great with many Art Deco pieces in my boutique – scroll down to see a selection.
